In my school we had Reason which I was happy about as I first got to play around with Reason when I was around 11 years old so when it came to finally being in the later years of high school with Music Tech and Music Production courses, I managed to finish the years worth of work in about 2 weeks hahaha!
I have been meaning to try Sony Acid, is it good and simply enough to use?
I've always found it hard to jump into other DAWs with how long I have been using Reason, the flow just fits perfectly once you have created your own initial templates

I was an fl guy 2 years before I delved into modularland so I think differently.
With that being said...After getting used to other daws my workflow went up drastically.

To be more indepth with how that's even possible, I usually set an exact length for each clip without a pattern mode in my way for sequencing.
[Daws with patternclips work the same way and have similar keyboard shortcuts most of the time, and do not lack the speed of linear daws]

But I noticed for what I was doing [stuff that did not fit a 4/4 most of the time so you'd have to manually adjust the clip after making the pattern in fl]
Was made quicker to do from the lack of this particular addition.

Man some very sweet sounds to be found here! Excellent work!!

I did make one dubstep-ish track, but it doesn't really have the signature sounds, as I am terrible at sound design and this was made before I got ReSpire which has some very nice presets. (I do love presets)

You can find it here:
http://www.globallocal.co.uk/remixspace ... le?uid=305 - It is the Temple Funk Collective one.

I would LOVE to know what you guys think of it. Again, it's not completely dubstep but I'd like to think it comes close. Since it was a remix competition and I didn't want to cheap out on using little of the original material, I basically went mental on the stems.

I really wish I could get into FL Studio but I would need someone to show me the ropes in person. I have been playing around with it on and off for about a year but still just confused with all the free-moving tabs within it.
That sounds pretty interesting, I use to be the same with some of my work but now I just try and stick to standard structures and lengths commonly seen in particular genres.

I was that one guy who read manuals. I'd show negrosaki quite a few tricks, the clown wouldn't see the track coming.
Anyways, they works pretty much the same minus the design philosphy and the really esoteric features being excluded/integrated etc.

Cheers man! Welcome to the chat :)

When it comes to sound design just experiment, learn, practice, get inspired and then practice some more! It is very hard but things fall in place over time haha!

I gave your track a listen and it is very interesting with the big band feel and nice bass tones!

Haha! Join the club man of manual readers!
I just checked Negrosaki's stuff out.. pretty unusual glitchy stuff haha
Yeah, I don't find the design philosophy straight forward at all.

The ones that confused me the most were renoise, usine hollyhock and lmms. [Those layouts are definitely not to my liking regardless of their books]

Thank you!

Yeah, experimenting was difficult for me at first. By now, I am getting used to what buttons do so I have a better feeling of what would happen and also start to understand more and more on how to create certain sounds, but I can only learn to much each time.

Basically, I tackle every song with wanting to learn something from it. The track I am working on right now is all about basic sound design and making sure the elements work together. Maybe next track I will get even more into sound design, or perhaps something else is worth learning for me at that particular moment. If anything, I am sure this won't be my last dubstep-like track.

I participate a lot in remix competitions as a way to learn new things but also give myself a deadline and all that, and I always listen to what the song asks me to do. This time it was mental dubstep, the track I am working on right now immedieately gave me a main stage festival big room house vibe, so I am making that. Not that I am a huge fan of the sound, but whatever, I enjoy the journey. In the end, I want to make house and techno, but before that, I want to learn.

That's the way to be, man! Just take every new track as a challenge in its own way :)
Like my latest track, I fancied giving Future Bass a go because I love the off beat drum break that's in the chorus and all the sidechaining on synths.
(Let me know what you guys think by the way)

Also, remix competitions are a great way to learn new things because you can hear the original and they it's your turn to have your own take on it and you can let your imagination run wild haha!

I think Reason is the master of experimenting with the ability of The Rack and it's wires! There is no limited to what you can do in other to make new and usual sounds :P

Bit late joining the party here but I like to make some dubstep using reason too, I do also like to make a lot of jump up DnB which is probably my first choice but dubstep is still a very close second!!

Never too late man! This thread is open for all things Dubstep and Bass related :)

Sweet! What Rack Extension do you like to use for your basses?

Awesome,

To be honest I haven't delved too deep into rack extensions just yet! Been using standard instruments like Thor and Subtractor really! I do like Malstrom but when you have Thor is it really necessary?!

I probably use Scream 4 like ALOT too!

I do tend to use a lot of 'other peoples' presets and try and reverse engineer them, which is what I did with NI Massive for as while, I mean now that reason has VST compatibility the choices are now endless!

how about yourself what's your Reason weapon of choice?

Nice! When I first started out doing Dubstep (I use to be a Big Room Trance, Psytrance and Chiptune producer when I was younger.) I use to use Malstrom and Thor in Combinators to experiment making bass wobbles! I use to put Scream 4 on them but I was never that big on the sound and at the time could never find a alternative.. But Now I use eXpanse as my main synth and my new substitute for Scream, and my trade secret for people that don't already realise this but... put a bass amp RE on any dubstep bass with the right settings will get a really naughty and nasty sound which I love ;) !
I have just bought Serum now so I am learning how to use that!

It's always good to reverse engineer to see how things work and then you have guidelines in making your own sounds with such knowledge :)
For some reason my Reason won't locate my NI Massive :( have you got yours working?

Fairplay I think it's always good to try out different styles and genres to start out with, I jumped in at the deep end and started with dnb, but have also tried my hand at hip hop, rnb and games sound track for my friend who is a games designer.

Nice yeah I'm gonna have to tryout some more synths and RE's now, reason has definitely needed vst comparability for years now and since v6 or v7 when you have the ability to record audio in it's become a standalone DAW rather than having to keep rewiring a second DAW for other features!

As for massive yeah mine wouldn't find it at first but after some reading I have found out why, reason isn't compatible with 32bit vst, so I went into program files, native instruments, then there is the 64bit folder and I added that to the reason vst folder and hey presto it was there! So glad to have got it working! Hope this helps slightly!

bingo! i do this for any kind of "dirty bass" synth and now i've been using Guitar Rigs amps as well!

it's amazing how good you can make a plain ole sawtooth wave sound with an amp and some tube saturation.

That is a pretty deep end starting out doing DnB haha! If you know what your'e doing it's not to hard though ;)
All my gamer friends want me to make music for games but I wouldn't know who I would approach if I did do that kind of thing but it is a interesting side of music production.

Let me know what new synths and RE's you use man! And yeah, Reason has needed VST support for around 5 years now! So happy I won't have to use ReWire anymore haha!

I eventually managed to get all my VSTs working in Reason,FINALLY! Turned out I had loads of VST files all over my computer and not in the main file that Reason wanted to scan

It's great isn't it! It changes your sound so much but I think it makes it sounds so great!

eXpanse + Bass Amp = BOOM! Dirty heavy bass!
