Thank you FailedMuso for the song challenge logo.

Someone asked me via Reasonistas if there was a list of all Reason Community Song Challenges. I could not find such a list so I decided it was time we put one together for inspiration. This list is sorted by date in descending order and based on a forum thread search. Please let me know if I've missed any.

Thanks Noel, but sadly the links will likely be dead within the hour.

edit: ok, I'm trying to grab the results OP's at least ;)

edit2: Embedded SoundCloud links in the PH forum just link to the post, not the SoundCloud :frown:

edit3: I got the OPs copied and saved.

Forum Peace Song Challenge Winners!

One month ago, I laid down a challenge to forum users to focus their energies on making music rather than participate in pointless arguments with trolls on the forum. The challenge was taken up by many and we had a whole bunch of high quality entries, all of which can be found in this thread. We then took all entries, gave them an airing on a UK community radio station and then opened up the voting.

And the winner is.....

KROMAKOI

Here's his winning track...

Second place goes to Manolis Moumouzias (aka mouema) for this track...

[Editor's Note: This track appears to have been nuked from SoundCloud]

And third place goes to Brian H. (aka fusion21) for this track...

Well done to you guys and well done to all of those that entered not only the competition, but also the spirit of the event!

I'd love to be able to offer a prize but sadly I have nothing to give except my gratitude.

Forum Song Challenge: And the winner is...!!!
Ladies and Gentlemen....

After long and concerted deliberation, our esteemed judge, Mark Reeder, has arrived at his decision and we have a winner for the second Forum Song Challenge. So, without further ado, Mark, Matt and I are very pleased to announce that the winner is....
Brent Rossen aka Dig Team One with his track "Getting Jiggery Wit' It"

Mark's comments were...
This took me much longer than I anticipated. I have listened to every entry thoroughly. I had a very hard job making my decsion. Now I have finally made my decision. It wasnt easy.

First prize is: Dig Team One - Getting Jiggery Wit' It (high standard, interesting and well thought out composition and quite original sounding, I liked the atmosphere it made)

A very very close second is: A Million Tiny Architects - Lost in Oscillations (really enjoyed this track too, it also had a great atmosphere, the only thing that stopped it being my number 1 was the second touch-too-loud/dry vocal as it made it sound too much like an afterthought)

Third is The Quixotes - Cockfosters PUA (thought this track was very inventive and I liked the psychedelic aspect of it)

Thank you for asking me to judge this competition.

So, there you have it!

And the special prize from Matt at Jiggery Pokery goes to...
artotaku with "Add or Alive"

Massive congratulations to you both!! There was an amazingly high standard of entries which meant that both Mark & Matt had to spend a lot of time listening to them all on heavy rotation, so congratulations to all of you for such amazing entries.

If the winners can contact Matt direct to sort out your prizes, he will take care of you.

And so, that brings this challenge to a close. But don't worry, challenge number three is already in the pipeline and almost ready to go.

Thank you all again. You have done yourselves, and me, very proud :D

Mark Reeder's new album, 5point1, is out on November 25th!

JiggeryPokery

'grats to DTO and artotaku.

[duck]Quite pleased that I came third in a competition to win my own ReFill ;) [/duck]

My shortlist was:

1. Gettin' Jiggery wit it (honestly! nul points for the title, but, 'kin 'ell, just a great production)
2. Add or Alive, great trance tune, great production, hits my spot, and thus becomes JP's Special Reserve winner by default!
3. Lost in oscillations. really, really love this one too, and funnily enough lost out on a top two position for exactly the same reason as Mark Reeder
4. Chilled Fantasy Instrumental, BlazeRProds. Liked this a lot too, very catchy melody.

Thanks to everyone who entered. I really enjoyed listening to 'em all.

DTO and artotaku PM me with your email, and I'll sort you out with a prize ;)

Failed Muso

Forum Song Challenge III - THE WINNERS!

Afternoon all!!

It gives me great pleasure to be able to announce the winning tracks from our third Forum Song Challenge!

I've just heard from Martyn and have the names right here.... ;)

First up, I'd just like to say a few words, ya know, in true X-Factor style, just to build the tension....

This is our third challenge and the response has been phenomenal. Loads of interest, so much creativity, and incredible amounts of support and camaraderie between users and an amazing amount of skill and talent on show. A lot of you guys send me loads of great messages thanking me for doing these, and they humble me, but the real thanks must go to all of you who participate and show so much enthusiasm for the challenges. Without you, there would be no challenge. I just facilitate, that's all. And I love doing that. But most of all, I love hearing your work, and I love seeing the passion and excitement. So, thank you one and all. You make these challenges, not me.

Right! Time for the announcement!

And the winner is...
Brent Rossen aka Dig Team One with his track "The 80's?!?"

Yes, Brent has won it again!! Martyn said of this track...
"A beautifully arranged and produced song with a haunting arrangement - a lot of thought and skill has gone into this - I found it impossible to turn off before the end - an object lesson in songwriting lyrically and musically"
So, Brent clearly has a magic touch! Congratulations to him and we will organise the delivery of the XXL ReFill as well as the extra prizes donated by Patrick which will be the latest B.E.F. box set, containing all B.E.F. tracks across 3 CD's as well as copies of the first two Human League albums, Reproduction & Travelogue, both masterpieces of electronic music. Congratulations Brent! Can you PM me your postal details?

Martyn's two runners up were...
"Auf Eis Legen" by A Million Tiny Architects aka hnelson

Amazingly, Holly gets a second runners up spot, just like the last challenge! Consistent! :)

Martyn's comments were...
"I love the weird epic nature of this, plus beautiful and unique vocal and electronic arrangements"
And the other runner up is...
"Not In MY Pocket" by Micky Dodds aka MickyDIreland

Martyn said...
"At least made an effort to pass social comment - and I like that - we need more - really like the palette of sounds too"
And there we go! The third challenge draws to it's successful conclusion. And now, it's time to take a rest. Not just for me, but for you guys. You have worked flat out on these songs for the last few months and I really hope it has all been a worthwhile experience for you all, whether you won or not. The bar has been well and truly set by Brent & Holly with their back to back successes. The fourth challenge will appear very early on 2012, so keep practising, don't let your creativity fester over the festive season, keep those juices flowing and I can't wait to get you all together again in 2012 for more challenges!

All that remains for me to say is a huge thank you to Martyn Ware for being our judge and to Patrick Fridh for sponsoring the event and supplying the prizes. Don't forget to check out the full XXL ReFill which is available to buy direct from Patrick. :)

Forum Song Challenges 2012 - Challenge 1: VAST - The Results!!

Image

Ladies & gentlemen, boys and girls...

Are we sitting comfortably? Good. Then I'll begin....

A few weeks ago, I set you all the first of this year's Forum Song Challenges. And, as usual, you guys responded with typical enthusiasm and effort, turning in some top tuneage. So, first of all, a huge thanks to you all for showing such great passion and for working your proverbial whatsits off again. Everyone of you are legends in my book.

Ok, so Dave emailed me this evening and not only did he give me his choice, he also gave me mini critiques of each entry! That's right, each entry! And.... he's added to the prize fund! So, the two runners up will both receive a set of GForce's now legendary Vintage Synth Trumps card sets! These are great fun for the synth geek in all of us, and not even I have a set of these!

However, the big news is that the winner of the challenge will not only receive a copy of the VAST ReFill, courtesy of Tom Pritchard, but they will also get their choice of one of GForce's Soft Synths!! Yes, that's right, our winner will be walking away with an M-Tron Pro, or a copy of Virtual String Machine or Minimonsta. They may like to choose the amazing impOSCar2 synth, or the fabulous Oddity. The choice is theirs!

Very cool, I think you'll agree! A massive thanks to Dave for his generosity!

Ok, so first of all, Dave wanted me to post the following on his behalf..."When Rob asked me to judge this contest a month or so ago, my immediate thought was that it'd be an easy thing to do coz there's bound to be two or three decent tracks amongst a sea of mediocrity or worse.

It just goes to show how wrong someone can be and after the first listen, although a few tracks jumped out at me as being especially interesting, the overall high quality of composition and production was such that I felt I needed to listen to everything once more.

Once turned into twice and then into three times and I can honestly say that with each listen a new track (or three) would pique my interest to the point where I had to really question how I was going to pick a winner and two runners up.

My initial method was to take an afternoon off work and to listen once more, writing notes on each track in the hope that something would jump out at me afterwards. However, once again it was impossible to separate winners because the diversity of music is such that judging in an overall context seemed unfair.

Realizing that I was the worst judge in the history of judges, finally, I settled on a criteria that might work. To listen one more time and see which tracks gave me the goosebump factor.

So....ladies and gentlemen, safe in the knowledge that everything I heard impressed me, and that my chosen winner and two runners up could just as easily have changed on a different day and in a different mood, here are my notes followed by my winner and two runners up...

Wonderful Day II by Andy Hyde - nice downtempo groove with an infectious nasally bassline. Well mixed too.

Across This Bridge: Nicola Alexandra Hajdu - haunting, trippy and pretty out there...and I mean that in a good way. Love the pad sound.

Attack Of The Jizz Monkeys: Grumbleweed. Should be in the top five for the title alone and it's about time toms were more prominent. Good programming too.

Half Vast: Broads Of Canada - Love the name of Broads Of Canada and this track really suits my frame of mind right now. Lovely peaks and troughs and considered drum programming together with a thoughtful production.

The VASTness of Electrons: EpiGenetik - great groove and some really interesting sounds. The arrangement works well too but might need trimming here and there. The synth riff at 1.47 had me smiling.

Ode to a Traveller: A Million Tiny Architects - A Zero-Seven-esque start which then changes into some really cool funk laden textures and sounds. Great vocal harmonies and neat arrangement. Some lovely shifts almost reminiscent of the more experimental 70's Stevie Wonder

Vast inspirations DDRex: 0Zone0 - Having just sold my soul to become the joint owner of an EMS AKS the intro made me smile. I'm not a fan of synth sync sounds but the second half of this really shines

Engineering: TheGrammarPolice - Kitsch and a great fun song. Long live the people who make something out of nothing

Evergreen: Itchy Brother Music - Had this on while working away and it took a while to work out what it was. Good version and to many of us, probably better and more definitely adventurous than the original.

Have You No Home To Go To: Undercurve - Great arrangement & production, lush, atmospheric and epic. I love the little surprise arp at 2.34 too.

VAST: Upright - Reason song challenge - nice groove, sounds and love the laugh. There's not enough laughter in tracks these days.

Agrippa: The Fat Controller - Great syncopated rhythms, sequences and a tough but simple bassline add up to a really energetic track.

A Troll In A Doll: Electric Fusion - A great blend of beats, sequenced lines and effects. A well composed and considered arrangement that holds my attention until the end.

Cracked And Shattered: Dig Team One - A bona-fide decent song with a lot of detail and percussion flying around and jumping out of the mix.

VASTity: turbopage - Great changes, great sounds, great chords, great vibe, great production makes this a definite potential winner for me. Even the outro makes me go "mmm"

Amid The Vast Emptiness: GEM - Really impressive. A decent blend of guitar, new and old synth sounds together with some great changes and twists.

Stompp The Mash: Clarktw - I started off by loving the bassline, arpeggios and the arrangement but questioning where the hi hats were. Sadly, the mashup didn't really do it for me though.

aVAST Matey: user35 - Punchy and crisp. To my mind some of the fills could do with tightening up but when the main groove is happening it's a tight as a duck's arse. Also nice to hear some guitar for a change.

Urban Exploration: Bureau of Broken Sounds -Great main theme and I really like the breakdown section. Definitely up there for me
ECO - BlazeRProds - Superb main theme and I do like my drum and bass. Great drum programming too and my only request would be to make the drums tougher.

Look Into My Eyes: GeorgeFeb - And talking of tougher drums here's some crazy tough drum programming as a backdrop to interesting sounds a great mix and a decidedly hypnotic female vocal. One of the tracks I'd like to hear in a club.

Honey: FATCheese - A short and sweet track with a lovely, nasty bass sound throughout and very cool complimentary top line at 0.40 and again at 1.48

Why Are You Walking Alone: Opabobby - A full-on proper ballad which highlights Reason's versatility and silences those critics who say that it's only for dance music. As a drummer my only request would be for more natural and human programming.

The Failing Muse: The Quixotes. Really reminds me of an 80s band called Scary Thieves who I thought were superb and the arrangement here reminds me a lot of the some of the better 80s Synth Pop that was around in my youth. Good song too."So..... ....

Who won?

Well, in Third Place, winning themselves a set of GForce Vintage Synth Trumps...

VAST: Upright - Dave added, "Too cool for school!"

In Second Place, also winning themselves a set of GForce Vintage Synth Trumps...

VASTity: TurboPage - Dave added, "Too well produced and interesting to leave out"

Well done guys!

MediaSVI

ID8 Song challenge WINNERS!

Ok we have our Winners of the ID8 SC and I have to say it must have been hard to pick them because each one was great in it's own way. Here they are right from the Judge Dean Dydek.

#3 - Ozlone the IV - We Can Do This Together: Love the retro vibe and reunion of classmates TR606 and TB303 still found in so many sample libraries to this day. Vocals, song structure, open hihats, claps and varying mono synth leads threaded throughout the song keep it interesting but has me wanting more vocals later in the song. Dont stop working on this one...!

-Runner Up-
#2 - Esselfortium - New Faction: Cool instrumental and a great mix, love the reverb, delays, filters opening etc... , build and sound choices throughout. Its an art to keep an instrumental composition interesting for the listener and you nailed it.

-Winner-
#1 - Ray Man - Time is a bird: Many reasons to like this submission, plenty of drums and percussive sample use, interesting vocal/vocoder like effects (which some may like or not). Nice chorusey electirc piano and string parts completes "Time is Bird" for me . Making the use of what the ID8 has to offer is evident in this song. Great job on this winning submission.

I will be contacting the winners with details on receiving their winnings Monday.

Thanks to all that took the time to make great music using just The ID8 and to our judge Dean Dydek for taking the time to listen to all of the songs and give us his professional time and expertise.

The next time anyone says they need this or that tell them to just fire up The ID8 and make some music.

[Editor's Note: MediaSVI never bothered providing direct links to the music tracks and the hard creative efforts the competition entrants, so I won't bother linking his website]

Forum Song Challenges - Challenge V: Synth Nation - The Winners!!
Sooooooooooo....

It's been a while! But we made it! This morning I received a mail from our judge, Marc Doty, informing me of his winner and giving me feedback on every single one of the entries. So, let's get right to the point here and announce our winner....

Ladies and Gentlemen, the winner of the Forum Song Challenge V: Synth Nation is....

Martin Brown
aka
Itchy Brother Music
aka
martinb98

Congratulations Martin!!
Martin wins himself a copy of the Synth Nation ReFill from SampleFiends. Sedric will be in touch!!

So, what did Marc have to say about Martin's entry?
"I heard this song, and it wouldn't leave me. I have found myself singing it over and over again. I heard it when I'm just on my way to work, or at the store. I really think it is quality songcraft, and I love it! I love the melody. It is very compelling to me with the music. This is a great pop song. I hope it's not offensive, but it sounds like something I would have loved in the late 80s. I would have totally bought the single. I like the stereo chord thing in verse two. The building in the verses is really effective. I found my head bobbing at the second chorus! 8675309... ha ha ha ha ha! The various parts are really effectively placed... instrumentally Cool end!"
And what of the others? Well, one of the reasons Marc took his time over the judging process, aside from carrying out his day job at Moog Music and the Bob Moog Foundation and his own work as Automatic Gainsay, is that he wanted to give constructive feedback to you all, so, in no particular order, here is what he had to say...
Doesn't Matter
Grumbleweed
The string dynamics lend authenticity
Singer is talented.
I like the vintage sound of the portamento-y lead.
The section with the frequency-diminishing snare, and the subsequent break is really cool.
Guitar solo is a good guitar solo.
The ending was unexpected, and I liked that.

Gray Cloud
noise beats sound
The girl's voice, the way she uses it, and the words are really cool.
The timbral choices really in line with what I like.
The simplicity is elegant.
The note choices in that sort of distorted-filter sound are interesting.
I like the vaguely-string part and how it builds.

Older
Andy Hyde
Nice vintage feel.
I like the intimacy of the vocals, I think it's really consistent with the topic.
I didn't expect the organ stabs, and I found them pleasing.
The high pitched thing over the organish and pianoish was nice, and then when the phasey guitar-pluck came in, I was really happy.
I like the guitar-pluck break.
I think the ending was interesting, how the vocal lines were broken up, and then the "much lighter" ending.

But the Stars
amilliontinyarchitects
I like the timbres at the beginning
I like the girl's voice, and the melody
The harmony is powerful when it comes in
I like the unexpected nature of the little synth solo before 2nd verse
The bridge is cool and welcome... vocals are a really nice contrast... dreamy
The vocals around 3:00 are really cool
I like the octave version of the vocals and what it bleeds into... that noise. Very cool

Ceiling Fans
TheGrammarPolice
I love the honesty of the recording. I like that the piano sounds like you're in the room with it, and I love the honesty in your voice.
When that whirry space sound comes in, it's VERY powerful.
I like the combination of the piano and the electronics
I am really into the build that happens in this song.
Wow, the break is unexpected and beautiful... the phone... GENIUS.
This bridgey part is poignant, the backing vocals... powerful... and then the drums/synth come in. Well done.
Ha ha, the chant... unexpected, and still works.

Something Wonderful
GEM
The naming sample is a great choice
I always like those staticky-burst snares
The full-drum entrance is powerful.
The chords and realization of this head part are really beautiful.
It has a soundtracky aspect that is very compelling.
The end of the break part is really cool.
The timbral choices work well together.
That gated snare is awesome.

Keith Floyd The Wall
The Quixotes
The arpeggiator part is beautiful, and confusing time-wise in a good way.
The strings are a good choice.
The bass sound is really pleasing, and the phasey synth chords!
The thereminey part when the beat comes in is well done.
The transition to the "happiness" part is interesting, and that tiny snare sound that happens for awhile...
The vocal samples are effectively implemented.

Hatred is Foolish
The FatControlleR
Bertrand Russell? Awesome.
I like the feel of the synth parts against the drums. That syncopation is compelling.
Ooh, the dreamy EP sound is interesting, and a good choice.
Very danceable, my head is bobbing.
I like the placement and implementation of the vocal samples.
The big fat bass sound is cool.
The break is fantastic. I like the chords against the bass with the vocal samples.
I like the interplay between the two different synth parts against the beat after the break.
The drum/bass/synth/sample breakdown at end is cool.

Awake
Neilq
I like the rhythm sounds at the beginning, and how you don't expect it to have a swing feel at first.
Really creative feel.
I like the verse melody, and your voice. Especially that triplet chord thing happening in the verse.
That weird chord synth sound that separates the second verse is really cool, and an effective connection.
The solo is really effective and suits the song very well.
The electric piano part at the end: EXCELLENT

lifted
bgh
I like the low end, the drums and bass.
That synth sound during the verse is cooler than crap.
Also, vocals and your voice are really cool.
I like how well the basic bass-snare-bass-snare works!
This is just a great pop song all around.
The various parts work well together, and it's a nicely crafted song, too.

Welcome Back Home
wilson75
The string-sounds and the music they're playing are very nice
This reminds me of the sort of balladesque electronic pop I loved in the 80s, very well emulated!
The way it builds is fantastic. The instruments that are added are great additions.
Claps are FANTASTIC
Backing vocals... very well done.

Life
electricfusion
Juicy synth sounds!
I like the chord progression and how it's realized with the synth implementations
Very creative use of timbre and articulation
When the beat started, it got my head bobbing!
The portamento lead is pleasantly haunting over that bass.
The timbres are so present and textural...
I like the triple feel of the end!

How Can She Be Sure
Joumb
The aggressive beat is compelling
That growing sound scared the shit out of me, very cool!
I loved when the echo dropped out of the drums
The syncopated bass part is hardcore, and the sort of thing I love
I like the extensive drum experimentation that happens... it is always changing!
The weird pitch thing that is happening on that last sound is really interesting!

Echo Chamber
Bureau of Broken Sounds
This reminds me of a band I was obsessed with in 1986. I hope that's a compliment!
Okay, yes... once the verse starts, and yeah!
This is a good pop song, and appeals to me because this is very much what I liked.
The snare sound post-Chorus is very cool.
Love the chord sound that comes in in second half of second verse
Solo at the end is very moving to me!
I like how the equalization and delay happens at the end! Cool!

Funky One
mastertonyd
This is definitely the right combination of timbres for funk!
Yep, and it's danged funky on top of that. The bassline is REAL funk.
The production is a fresh change from much of what has been submitted, it stands out!
Great funk feel and sound, had a great time listening

energie(monotone galaxie mix)
Cr68
I am always a sucker for vocoder.
The bassline grabs me already!
The place the drums lie in regard to equalization and timbre is AWESOME and unique
Uh oh, my head is bobbing.
If I were on a dancefloor, I'd be dancing.
The background synth with the filter is really cool.
You are great at using basic elements and arranging them in a compelling way

Synth Mania
jdavison67
I like the nonMoog sounding choices right off the bat
also, nice beat!
There is a DX-ish thing going on that is catchy
The chorus is a nice combination of the synth sounds! Great
A nice laying and combination of motifs
I like the solo sound and part at the end!

Sexy Sax
GeorgeFeb
Oooh, Drum and Bass sound! I love it.
I like the bass wobble deal... that is VERY cool and unexpected
Then, of course, the sax is very nice
The breakdown part is welcome and compelling
The synth sound in the breakdown with the LFO is excellent
I like the vaguely choral sound underneath the sax in the second breakdown
the drum fill that brings the beat back in is SO cool

Waiting
Dig Team One

Verse vocals are extremely cool
I like the swelling synth sounds behind the vocals in the verse
The pitch-dropping bass drum is SO cool
I like the string break
Echo on verse 2 vocals... superb
Excellent and moving song

BEAUTIFUL ending

No Boundaries
robhornsby
I like the intro sounds chosen, and the realization.
The phasey synth is very cool. I like the focus on it.
This is a cooooool build. I like the Numan-esque synth part, and when the bass starts doing its thing.
I like the moody string part towards the end.

A Reason to This Rhythm
Opabobby
I like the triplet feel of the initial melody, and the production is really nice.
Nice production
Ooh, nice guitar solo!
The Electric Piano-ish part is very expressive.

Ablaze
BlazeRProds
Nice feel, and I like the surging production
The melody is cool, and I like how the harmony in that voice interplays with the melody
The "more bass!" part is awesome
The momentary break is compelling!
I like the portamento lead.
The end nicely features the timbral texture of that bass sound

So, there you have it! Another challenge over and another bumper crop of incredible talent on display. My thanks to Marc for judging and to Sedric for providing the sound palette. And my deepest thanks to all of you who took part. Without you, this stuff wouldn't happen. A big thank you to you all
So, a little time to regroup and Song Challenge VI will be upon us soon!

Until next time....

[Editor's Note: FM on this occasion took the trouble to handlink each individual entrant; I've removed these and left only the winner purely because of the insanely large SoundCloud embedding format. Sorry!]

Failed Muso
Forum Song Challenges - Challenge 6: Re-Tron - The Winners!
Well, not one to keep you guys waiting, Dave & Chris have been hard at it since Sunday afternoon and I now have the results. Also, I have some words from Chris & Dave that they would like me to share, plus personal critiques from the guys on each and every one of the entries!!
And to top that, the prize package has increased!! SIGNIFICANTLY!!
So, without further ado, let me pass the virtual mic' to Dave and Chris, owners of GForce Software, after which I will announce the winners. Dave? Chris? Over to you
We've said it a million times before but after release of the original M-Tron back in 2000, we were inundated with CDs from happy users eager to let us hear their work, and while it's always been a thrill to hear how musicians use the fruits of our labour, there's only so many times you can hear another regurgitated version of a Prog Epic before you start to lose the will to live.
Several months later, while wondering if we'd created a monster and done the music world a disservice, we suddenly started to receive CDs from a new generation of user who had carried none of the prog-baggage and instead used these evocative tones in a new, fresh and exciting way. That was when we started to jump for joy and it's thanks to those CDs (from musicians such as Putte and Harmonic33 if you want to check them out) that our Melly passion continued unabated over the following twelve years

During that time we've twice built Refills so as to provide the Reason community with some real Melly substance but after doing the work it's never been as graceful a solution as we wanted so nothing saw release
Rack Extensions is exactly the elegant solution we'd been hoping for and we jumped on the idea of bringing the Melly vibe to this platform because (a) we've always respected Propellerheads and (b) we've always considered Reason users connoisseurs of fine music making software.
So here we are after release of Re-Tron and having invested a rather large sum of money in bringing the Re-Tron to Reason users, but until we get our first royalty statement we have absolutely no idea if all that time and effort was a complete waste or if we've sold so many copies we can afford to retire.
Actually the retirement bit of the last sentence is a joke - that's not going to happen as we'd rather give our money to the pub landlord instead of those sharp suited assholes who claim to look after your future while secretly using it to find their lavish lifestyle….
…anyway, sorry, I digress…..But the truth is while we sit and wait slightly nervously, Failed Muso's idea of a competition seemed a good idea if for no other reason than it might make a good distraction while we wait.
However, listening to your submissions to this competition has been much more than a distraction. In much the same way as those fresh CDs did all those years ago, it's inspired us…big time! In fact, several submissions here made us consider that just to have provided the tools to enable these tracks to be written might make the Re-Tron graft worthwhile alone.
So while it's an often used cliché that "the entries were so good we had a hard time picking one winner" in this case it really is true. In fact, it was so difficult we decided to opt for 1st, 2nd & 3 Places and even then we had a hard enough time deciding which they were from our short list of ten.
So, ladies and gentlemen.. here's the new prize list
1st Prize = 3 GForce instruments of their choice plus the next GForce Rack Extension as soon as it's released
2nd Prize = 2 GForce instruments of their choice
3rd Prize = 1 GForce instrument of their choice
NB: An instrument can be either the Re-Tron or one of our existing plug-ins
So thank you VERY much to everyone who entered. The standard of work is so high and stylistically varied we're totally blown away by all of your work.
Chris & Dave
Thanks guys!

So, up next, here is what Chris & Dave had to say about each and every one of your efforts...

All I Know- Bibi Jockoso

Great vibe. Bonus points for using the audio from the old Mellotron Pathe News and double bonus points for the impOSCar too.

CircusTron - Upright
Very impressive. Up and funky. Like it. Nice to hear the Tron used like this.

Tangerine Dream Style - largo02
Like the shuffled synth element offsetting some neat Tron patches

Nort On Board – Moofi
We're always suckers for the backwards guitars so this had us from the off. Nice chords and that lead patch has exactly what we wanted to hear from Re-Tron….an old nostalgic vibe but with something new about it too.

The Secret Lives of Stars – Undercurve
Great track. A proper song that again uses Re-Tron sounds in a new and refreshing way. Love the trumpet, Alligator & pulsar sound combo. Inspiring stuff.

13 Little Re-Trons Sitting In A Row - The Fat Controller
Again, really good use of classic Tron sounds but in a new and fresh way

Garden City Supply Jingle – Jbensonjingles
Very funny and very good. We came close to Googling Garden City Supply to see if it was real or a spoof. We hope you got the gig if it's the former.

Not Quite Lost – BetraX
Nice work. We love the grainy quality of the Re-tron piano and the strings are always timeless

Re-Tron Symphony - the fix
Contemporary beats and old school Tron sounds is always a winner here. Top job which definitely deserves an honourable mention.

Cush - Greg Hobgood
Great intro, great production and a great atmospheric vibe. Would work really well in a film and again is definitely worth an honourable mention.

ReTronica - Mad_ManX
Surprise beats after the flute intro and when those typical dubstep synth sounds kicked in we went "Oooo" Nice to hear Tron sounds working so well with those contemporary dubstep tones

Spy Heels - Wendy Dunham
Again, someone who's taken the Re-Tron sounds and made them their own. Loved the fact that we were confused as to 'is this Tron or not" for some of the sounds

Vangelisstyle Lead - largo02
Nice combination Re-Tron sounds. Could easily be a track from the 70s from someone like Tangerine Dream or Brainticket

Many Happy Re-Trons – Grumbleweed
Impressive guitar solo which is always harder than a lot of people imagine when using a keyboard. Top work.

Largo02 track2 - Largo02
This is definitely very Tangerine Dream and rather lovely. See how that 8 second limitation makes the music breathe. Top stuff.

largo02 PopTrack - Largo02
Nice and aggressive but still with that 70s vibe. Neat drum programming and the lead is beautifully nasty. Would love to use this as a demo for the website.

Largo02 - largo02
By this time, the variations on a theme are starting to become a bit obvious. Not dissimilar to all those Prog CDs we were sent years ago ;-)

Empty Layers – mattpiper
Brilliantly in your face. Brilliant drum programming. Lovely use of the Re-Tron sounds and a lovely vibe. Matt would have come second if he didn't work for Props ;-)

Even though you don't want to – TheGrammarPolice
Dave remembered this band from the previous Reason comp and with good reason. Great humour and quirky vibe…all in all a perfect marriage with the Tron

lo la notte – turbopage
Great chords from the off and the surprise vocals made us stop and listen. A lovely combination.

meloYaOut – UWD
Nice mellow and atmospheric track and as we said before, we're always a sucker for the reverse guitar patch.

Two Faced – Schlang
Love the vibes and the groove when it kicked in. Another track great use of the various Re-Tron patches in an imaginative way and which we'd happily use on our website as a demo of what can be done.

Chinatown - t2hmusic
Love that motif that kicks in at 26 secs. Well produced and again, a track we'd be pleased to use as a demo on our website any time.

Revel – deankay
The dark side of the Re-tron. Really atmospheric music and vocals and the way the sounds and, in particular, the cello at 2.33 onwards is used really adds some menace. Very nice work.

Walk away - noise beats sound
Great intro and a nice reggae feel thereafter. Good orchestration and vocals too.

Castaway - Kings Of Democracy
We love it when people use the Tron cello to great effect such as is evident here. Brilliant changes too
Run – RoboticEFX
Tron robot reggae? We love it! The juxtaposition of the Tron, fizzy bass and this style of music makes us smile…..In a good way, of course!

Drifting Tron - 0zone0
Like Raymond Scott on acid or the ghost of a 1960s guitarist stuck in between worlds. We salute the originality of this track

Mapped Out - Glorious Scenes
A cinematic start and when the groove kicks in with that baseline, we smiled. Another track that we'd be pleased to use as a Re-Tron demo example.

Get Them – BlazeRProds
Another well produced and kicking track which takes the Tron into new territory. Yet another one we'd love to use as an example of what can be done with classic sounds.
Eurydice's Farewell – GEM
A lovely intro that turns into a cool song with great breakdowns, tension and builds. Love the gentle fragility of the vocals too. Another honourable mention in our opinion.

Never Thought Of You (That Way) - The Quixotes
Another act we remember from the previous competition due to the evident songwriting and arrangement skill. Reminded me of Edwyn Collins and begs the question, if this act hasn't got a deal, why not?
Getaway - a million tiny architects
Superb intro with all the anticipation of an old school experimental Tron track and then those sublime vocals kick in. Definitely a track that we'd love to use on the website as a prime example of what can be done with considered and skilful orchestration

Liberty – Hrmonik
Probably the most surprising entry in the Re-Tron competition and really inspired use of an instrument that all too often is associated with Prog. Nice one!

extemporaneum for re-tron combinator - am0eba
An interesting combination of what seems to be Radical Piano, Re-Tron and perhaps the Polysix. Strangely hypnotic

Our Finest Hour – VillaN
A nice selection of Re-Tron sounds combined to make a great hook against the glitchy groove.

Mini Mello Melody - Raymond Hayter
Lovely intro and great production. Extra points added for squeezing the Sax in there too. Definitely a track we'd love to host as an example of what can be done with some skill and talent.

Retron competition – Agua
Great intro and lovely groove. All those Re-Tron sounds carefully shoe-horned into something with space and atmosphere contributes to another demo we'd be proud to have on our site.

Life Is Easy, if you're welcome - fragile tom
Great production, great orchestration, great arrangement, great vocals and an interesting song. I think this is the first time we've heard a Tron on anything overtly 80s beside Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark.

Fair is the end – EchoProjectStudio
Another track we'd be proud to use on the website and one that shows how those classic strings are far more than a one trick pony. Great percussion programming too. Oh, and that end is inspired :-)

Re-tronia – nikoslevantis
What is it about Re-Tron sounds that help create such good intros? Sometimes an intro can end up going nowhere but here that's not the case and this is close to being a master-class in showing off the Re-Tron sounds via both an interesting musical style and skilful production and playing.

And so, to the winners...

In Third Place...
https://soundcloud.com/ethanday/the-ship
The Ship – ethday
Great vocals, great arrangement and the is that the mandolin we hear at 1.50? The breakdown and build are superb as is the overall quality of production and the positive message. 3rd PLACE!

In Second Place...
[Editor's Note: This appears to have been nuked]
Upon The Paths Of light - Darksphere Empire
Well produced, arranged and mixed with great string lines, chords and a wonderful groove, it's tracks like this that inspire us when we sit for days and weeks coding and writing. We definitely want to use this as one of the Rack Extension page demos and for that alone we award it 2nd PLACE!

And our First prize goes to...
https://soundcloud.com/ray-man/walk-with-me
Walk With Me - Ray Man
Stunning! Made us stop and listen and reminded us of Gilbert O'Sullivan (who, with the exception of "Clair", we think is one of the great songwriters). Superb vocals and arrangements and we feel proud to have contributed to such a wonderful track. Brilliant end too. How can it be anything other than……1st PLACE!
So there you have it! Congratulations to all of our winners and to every single one of you for your efforts of such excellent quality! You've done yourselves, the Mellotron and the Reason Community as a whole VERY proud!
If all the winners could drop me a personal message here in the forum, I will tell you all how to claim your prizes. If you could also tell me what you want, that would be very useful. Visit www.gforcesoftware.com for more info on their product range. I need to enter one of these competitions as I'm desperate to play with impOSCar and the Minimonsta!!
And with that, the 6th challenge is over and the 7th is waiting in the wings! Next time, there will be a bit of a twist, so be on your guard and start honing those skills!
I would just like to extend my thanks to Dave & Chris for their full and total support of this challenge. They have both been incredibly good to me and to you guys too. They are true gents and a rare breed in this industry. They really do believe in the Reason Community and they fully deserve our support for their continued involvement in the Rack Extension arena.
And thank you to each and every one of you, for your enthusiasm, your unbridled talent and your gallant sportsmanship. The way you all encourage each other is amazing and a joy to behold. It really does add weight to the term "community" and makes it a very strong and powerful thing. Kudos to you all.
I'm off to have a lie down....

Edouard describes the production of Party People: "Edouard plays cajon, electric bass and acoustic Guitar. After quite a journey touring with bands from jazz to metal, he decided to invest in a studio project where he could explore and build his own musical style blending all past influences into something new… A blanket of electro where his creativity could just go wild with no limits. That is how Synaptic Machines came to life in mid 2011 with the Credo: Kick off the beat, torture them damn filters and make da compressors cry!

The recent arrival of rack extensions in mid 2012 on his favorite musical platform, Reason, was a true blessing as it opened a new world where technical issues would fade away leaving way to unlimited imagination. One of the first REs out there was Buffre from PEFF labs, actually the first RE he purchased. The first thing Edouard tried was to take a vocal sample and see how he could torture it a little. That was an instant “Coup de Foudre” for Buffre! His standard Buffre starting point setup became the Pitch and Randomise assigned respectively to the pitch bend and one of the sliders of his controller or the modulation wheel (Ozonic). He uses a Pad Kontrol to select the repeat pattern length. Once set, he actually plays Buffer like an instrument.

This first tweeked rap line was the seed of “Party People”, the first track of Synaptic Machines using REs. I felt it appropriate to submit what resulted from his initial steps with BUFFRE to the contest. After composing , sound designing and crafting some sweet synth lines, building a beat that gives a latino and “Partyful” ambience, recording a little guitar, he started to use buffer a little bit everywhere: In addition to the rap lines, on the female vocal hook (1.09), on the female vocal bridge (2.06, 3.11), on the piano (2.24, 2.42), on the synth hook (2.44) and tweeked it also for some ear candy as in 1.44 (word “ lunatic”). There are a total of 7 instances of Buffer in the track.

Oh, and a little secret, playing Buffre and Echobode together… hummmm … sweet ;-)!"

Invisible by Department of Energy

Department of Energy on the inspiration of Invisible: "Department of Energy are Mario and Klaus, who independently began to produce tracker music in the early 90s. They met by coincidence in 1994, and soon decided to work together as Department of Energy. When Propellerhead Software released Reason back in 2000, Department of Energy instantly abandoned Impulse Tracker and embraced the revelation called Reason, which is still their production software of choice.

Invisible started as an experiment while watching Mattias Häggström Gerdt's Product Specialist Series about the gated delay effect, which was the inspiration for the main lead. With the melody parts done, we also decided to include some vocals. While they worked well, they were lacking the “wow” effect – and because of this, Invisible went back to the drawer.

Later, when Mario was participating in the Reason 6.5 beta, he came across Peff’s videos introducing Buffre and was amazed by the new possibilities. Needless to say, he bought it on the spot as soon as it became available, actually making Buffre his first extension. He instantly applied Buffre to the vocals in Invisible, which not only lead to amazing results but also new inspiration which allowed us to finish the track."

Special Mention: Can't Find Peace by White Noise Bleed

Guillermo discusses his track, Can't Find Peace: "I'm Guillermo, a.k.a white_noise_bleed from Buenos Aires, Argentina. I work as an audio editor, post producer for a tv production company since 2004. I’ve being making "music" since 1994 as a self-taught musician, producer and sound designer. Also, I played Keyboards for a rock band. After quitting the band, I began making more abstract stuff just to avoid getting rusty (I´m a father to so it´s hard to make a career as a full time musician). I usually spend a couple of ours at night making funny things with reason.

About the song and the use of reason and Buffre: I always try to make things work when they're not supposed to and mostly within Reason. When Buffre was announced, I was expecting to find a tool that allow me to stay in Reason, and have to rewire to another DAW to create the postproduction and glitch stuff.

For the song contest, I tried to make a dubstep (I sucked at it), then something more fast (couldn’t achieve anything), and then I started this project. I tried to use only reason and no samples as a sound source, except for the piano track (NN-XT grand piano with some efx on it), and one kick sample used for one of the basses; and of course some drum samples for the drum parts (used only what´s in the Reason library). Then I changed that kick for one in the Reason [factory sound bank], so I could share the song with other Reason users.

The starting point was Buffre used on the pads channel and a group of devices being recorded to one audio track. I tweaked as much as I could (used a couple of trial RE’s in that channel mostly as cv triggers going to a Kong and some of the Kong cv outs going to another pad cv in). All that passed thru u-he Ambience thru The Echo then Polar, and made it sync to tempo with Alligator. I recorded a couple of "jams", then later I used as this as the sample source for some of the glitches and rhythms.

Buffre is used on the pads in the first half of the song and in the ending pads. I thought that it would be nice to make it glitch something apart from drums. Buffre creates the stutter and the pitch bend effects. I routed the position cv to the filter frequency and from the follower into the length sweep cv input from the Pulverizer chained after Buffre, and in the main beat it makes the beat repeater and the pitch drop downs. There was a third buffre in the master section, which was not used in the final result, just as a test."

The JP 40th Anniversary Prize Challenge o' Song! The Winners

Eleven souls dedicated hours of their life to fashion new songs out of some hoary old demos lurking unloved and unfinished in the bowels of the JP archive.

Let's start by going through them all!

Rock Extension
The 80s – on the bubble mix
Oh, a bluesy reworking. Clearly the man knows me too well. If you knew me even better you’d have put a Farfisa Compact on it too! Really enjoyed this rearrangement. Drums felt a bit over compressed, but most definitely a rock extension. Needs some lyrics at some point.

Runbantayrun
Classic Piano – Ambient Bass
Good use of the ambient bass, nicely mixed. While I liked the way a particular piano riff was used, I felt the piano could have developed more as the song progressed. Liked it a lot, but it left me wanting a bit too much more.

Knickle
Undercooked Doughnuts
Great use of the two main motifs and bassline, and the new dance sub-bass. Not sure about the major middle eight, but I’ll forgive it as the next breakdown with the sirens and vocoded voice is really great.

Artotaku
The 80s – 30 Years After Remix
Deconstructing the same demo as Rock Extension, this time as a modern club classic, the piano bass was a very pleasant surprise, but it might be a little bit unpredictable for the club crowd: the subsequent big build-up crescendo is great but then the track kind of stops to build again. The piano bass should probably be doubled at a higher register in the latter stages too. Those are minor quibble though. Another cracker from a previous winner of FMs Song Challenges.

Turbopage
Ambient Cafe (turbopage rework)
Excellent stuff here. The dulcimer lead was nice, but really I love the use of harmony here. The string arrangement was fabulous and there was a lot of depth to the tune with subtler secondary and harmonically pleasing leads. The use of an “Equinoxesque” percussion line didn’t hurt either: couldn’t tell whether that was a deliberate attempt to appeal to my Jarre-influenced tastes I cannot say. Nice try though!

Elephant Talk
Bad Trumpet Nope Its Bad Sex Oops a Bad Sax
Excellent development of a demo into a full track. Loved the faintly glitchy new intro and breakdowns (and typically I dislike glitch). Particularly fond of the last section that doubles the bass on a higher flute-y sound to counterpoint the repeat of the bad sex sax itself. Wisely kept the track to minimum length, it doesn’t outstay it’s welcome.

VillaN
Stomppy Intro (Villan’s lazy days variation)
Fantastic mix, great synth stabs and even a hint of wub, just enough to be an effective textural technique and not an annoying cliché. The bassline is perhaps a tad too lazy though, and it needs tightening up.

0zone0
601 undercooked jungle spiders
A fascinating track that combines two demos, and it works really well. Very nice mix of textures, including noise sweeps. Particularly liked the question and answer repeating of the main riff on different sounds. Perhaps the tune could have been developed a bit more in the final 30 seconds. I still can’t work out which of the two demos is which, so well intertwined were they.

FATCheese
Sequences 601 – FATCheese Rework
The kilogram-challenged Cheesemeister also went with a two-track combination, 601 and The 80s. This didn’t quite work for me though. Like Mate in his comment, I also love the “squiggles” breakdown, and it left me wishing perhaps the track should have been less of a literal combination of the two demos and more of the deconstructively mood-squiggled.

Ignis fatuus
CMI Riffin modecai
Excellent use of percussion, stereo and fx sweeps. The opening 15 seconds were great, but I thought the remainder of the section in major didn’t quite work against the first CMI riff; however the middle section and third section are brilliant. It definitely needed a “moodier” opening to offset the major key-build up and into the passionate, relaxing final part.

GeorgeFeb
Funky Cheese
Er, yes. Um... George. I love you, Mate! I hope you know that! Sadly, I think you were fighting a losing battle sticking to my goddawful bassline and that hoary old FSB REX loop. I’d still like to hear you do a remix of the drum’n’bass demo, as I quite liked the dnb stuff you did for FM’s Challenges (and I’m not a dnb fan at all).

And so, with the scores on the doors, here are the runners-up of JP’s 40th Anniversary Competition:
In third place
Knickle - Undercooked Doughnuts
Got extra points for keeping that screechy sequence at the 1 minute mark, which I love, and overall this was a really well-developed full song, brilliant production, smart use of my original chord riff, and fabulous use of Vocoder. I have no idea what the vocoder words are... “JP is a tosser”?! That major middle eight just put it out of contention for the top spot. Otherwise I could listen to it all day.

In second place
Artotaku - The 80s – 30 Years After Remix
I could listen to this all day too. Needs an extra mix to make it a Club Classic, but once again I can’t fault Art’s production and prog-trance skills, and it’s a worthy runner up.

Both runners-up will receive:
1x Charlotte Envelope Generator RE at the time of its launch in the Propellerhead Shop very soon!
Plus a choice of any one Jiggery-Pokery ReFill.

And the winner ...

... of JP’s 40th Anniversary Challenge o’ Song ...

... is...

... coming right up after this commercial break ...

... is ...

Elephant Talk - Bad Trumpet Nope Its Bad Sex Oops a Bad Sax!
Somehow Elephant Talk took the bad sex sax solo and bass then whittled them into shape around a very impressively mixed song with original sections featuring flanged chords and guitars and in the process managing to get me to appreciate glitch (a little ;) ).

Elephant Talk will receive:
1x AMMO 1200 RE, and 1x Charlotte Envelope Generator RE at the time of their respective launches in the Propellerhead Shop.
Plus a choice of any two Jiggery-Pokery ReFills.

My thanks to all those who entered, some inspiration stuff in there. I'd very much like to have a copy of your Reason songfile for reference and possible additional work.
And congrats to the winners, but you know, it’s my 40th birthday and I'm a generous, giving soul so no-one goes home empty-handed this day!
The eight other entrants can select any ReFill currently priced at £9.99 or less on my website or a JP super-spider currently in the PropShop.
Everyone who entered JP's 40th Anniversary Challenge o' Song should PM me with their email addresses forthwith, and ensure you include your SoundCloud name so I know exactly who's who, and what ReFill takes your heart's desire!
That is all! Carry on!

[Editor's Note: I also linked to each song described, but again, I've removed these and left only the winners for sake of our sanity in browsing this page]

Winter Antidote Refill Song Challenge - And The Winner Is...

The judges have listened carefully to each of the entries in the challenge, independently assessing each track against a variety of criteria such as effective/showcased use of the Winter Antidote Refill, musical technique, technical/production technique, and subjective musical appeal. Then we put our heads together and compared notes to select the challenge winner. Without further ado....

Congratulations to Zeebot, "Yo Clayderman" is the winner of the Winter Antidote Refill Challenge!

If you haven’t heard the song, here it is:

Here’s what the judges had to say about Yo Clayderman:
  • Beautiful introduction.
  • Very nice work.
  • The distorted along with the lush worked so well.
  • Sounded to me like the soundtrack to an old Amiga game.
  • The drums mixed with the piano were just great and I loved how it all fit together.
  • This sounds like a good demo track that you might find in a synth ROM to showcase its patches.
  • Great atmospheric piece.
  • Very nice soundscape.
Zeebot, we will be in touch about how to redeem your prize. Congratulations and well done. You had very, very tough competition in this challenge!

Which brings us to the rest of the entries…

Really superb entries folks, it made judging very difficult. We were impressed with the consistently high standard achieved, especially given the constraints of the challenge. While we could only select one winner, each of us had our favourites.

Here’s some feedback on each of your tracks;

Knickle - Spirits High
  • Great showcase for the refill. Sounded like it could be a demo track for the refill.
  • Great pumping beat.
  • Good dance track.
  • Good use of filtering

Martin B. Francis – (I Need an) Antidote
  • Awesome pop song.
  • Had the vibe of a classic synthpop track with more updated instrumentation.
  • Enjoyed the changes especially after the chorus.
  • Cool vocal really fit with the music.
  • Loved the breakdown at 1:20. Interesting structure with only one chorus.
  • Very catchy, great dance track

Dr. Soul - Snow Scratch
  • Pseudo record scratching was awesome.
  • Beat was excellent.
  • Great rhythm.

  • Reminds me of Yello, with the crisp sound with a lot of interest.

Eick. - Winter Is Coming ft. Julianna McDuffie
  • Awesome modern synthpop.
  • Great blend of Dance and Synthpop
  • Not your typical synthpop voice but it really works. Not exactly like him but I would compare it most to Peter Hook.
  • Loved Julianna's chorus... really gave a great contrast to the verses.
  • Some of the synth fx transitions reminded me of modern Erasure. Sort of like a revived Book of Love.
  • Very catchy

GEM - Through the night ft. Holly Nelson
  • Gorgeous song.
  • Loved the darkwave/trip-hop vibe.
  • Beautiful vocals, especially when the harmonies come in towards the end.
  • Enjoyed all the little details thrown in here and there.

  • Great instrumentation, supported the vocals perfectly.

A million tiny architects - Winter ruled the world

  • Also enjoyed how the song kind of floated off into the ether at the end.
  • I couldn't hit ‘fast forward’, thoroughly absorbing through to the end.
  • Very detailed with a lot of little phrases and variations
  • Beautiful vocals
  • Great soundscape – it took me for a journey.

  • Great percussion & rhythm.
  • Nice use of Refill patches
  • Nice core chord progression
  • Clever technical work with glitching, distortion FX

user35 - The Breach
  • Awesome how main theme was so operatic! Could have been the in-game music for Castlevania.
  • Beat was simple and didn't take focus away from the music.
  • Loved how much variation of theme there was throughout the piece.
  • Inspiring how the main theme flowed into the secondary theme.
  • Excellent synth solo
  • Great driving beat
  • Very cool arcade/game sound

A.H. Peterson – Gargoyle
  • Liked the bass very much. Both the sound and the bassline reminded me a lot of Front Line Assembly.
  • All the parts fit very well together.
  • Great intro.
  • Nice layering of synths
  • Very atmospheric

Jaeppel - Six and One

Noxious Song Challenge Winners

So let me just start by saying how difficult this was to decide. I'm glad that Zvork helped me out with the judging. There were quite a few songs that deserved to win, and it was obvious the effort and focus that went into each song, but unfortunately we could only justify giving out a handful of prizes. I want to once thank everybody who participated, and especially those people who left their comfort zones in order to try new things and evolve as artists and producers. I hope that everyone listened to each entry and enjoyed the variety of styles that came out of this challenge. You are part of an elite group that isn't afraid to make something spectacular with limited resources and a lack of hand-holding.

So without further delay, I am pleased to announce the winner of the Noxious Song Challenge! Please put your hands together for...

A Million Tiny Architects

After a few listens this song was embedded deep in my psyche. It had some very intriguing and original sound design going on, an understated and finely balanced mix, and a gripping melody and arrangement with haunting vocals and lyrics. Both me and Zvork's first pick. Great job!!

And that's not all! Zvork was so impressed he wanted to offer a few more Noxious licenses, so we decided to choose a couple of runner-ups for sound design and songwriting. I would love to have given away more of course but I don't want to put the poor guy out of business!

For songwriting we have..

The Grammar Police

A very original production, most definitely not afraid to step out of the box and do something completely different. The odd time signature and intricate vocal layering bring it up to another level.

For sound design we have..

GEM

A chilling, writhing piece that uses sound design to expertly communicate the feeling or setting that the producer wanted to transport us to. Proof that Noxious is a top of the line synth in the right hands.

Winners, Zvork will be getting in touch with you to get you your prizes.

Just want to say one more time, thanks everyone who participated! I hope you got something good out of it, whether it be a few new listeners, or a chance to hear the work of other regulars from the forums. If you are dissapointed that you didn't win, and we all know that feeling, all I can say is.. keep an eye out for the next Song Challenge, and don't give up! Your talent and positive energy have not, and will not, go unnoticed. Major kudos to all of you, and keep up the good work

Song Challenge
THE WINNERS

Opening Statement
First and foremost we would like to thank Rob Papen, Jon and Richard for developing Quad and for making this Song Challenge possible. We congratulate the entire contestant group for their hard work and participation. We had a great time listening to all 61 songs. Surprise Announcement
Given the record breaking number of submissions, we decided to use a different voting system to increase the total number winners from 3 to 17. This also meant that we had to update the prizes. Prize - Quad and 1 other RP Re device of choice

Yes, there was Hamu's Newtrol Patch Contest and Community Refill, but this ended on February 28th.  We are reviewing the submissions to announce the outcome soon.

There are currently no song challenges, but there are a few synth REs in development and/or in beta.  Stay tuned for a possible song challenge(s) coming soon.
