Man that genre description is a mouthful.

Anyway, my newest work. Seriously this thing nearly broke me. I recorded it from November last year andd finished last week, using my Polyend Tracker loaded with loops cut from my album Silk Purse, very messed around with and then put back into Reason for mixing and additional effects. There are like, nearly 200 separate loops on it and a lot of things either went wrong or I did wrong, and had to do a bunch of back tracking and re-loading onto my computer and, well, I don't need to paint you a picture.

Anyway, my aim with this was to make something that would be played quietly and ideally with the window open to mix in some environmental noise from wherever you live. To that end, as I say in the little paragraph about this album on bandcamp, I mixed the bass comparatively loud, and most of the other sounds are only just audible and minimal. I also knocked the high end of everything so overall it sounds like it's playing in the next room. You'll need a good sub bass to really get the most out of it, or decent headphones. I dunno, like most of my stuff it's not for everyone but after the miserable-making process of recording it, I think it's come out okay, despite the fact it's kind of eccentric. I certainly learnt a bunch of new techniques so worthwhile for me anyway, hopefully good to listen to.

Nice experimental stuff!

I really like your idea to have the listener complete the art by adding their own environmental sounds - and mixing it for that purpose! One tune, many experiences; inspiring.
It sounds there's a bit environmental sounds already - or is that added noise?

Anyway, I need to study a bit tomorrow and I will have this album in the background while my cleaning robot does its thing and probably the cats will chime in too lol.

Well done.

Hey! thanks for listening.
Yup, I added a field recording I made a few years ago in an underground car park with a big air conditioning fan in the background. Good catch.

I like this experimental stuff. It's quite unique with the lowpass, the white noise and the quiet percussion. i think you're onto something here. I'd be curious to make something really lowpassed like this myself

do it!
as I said, rather than using white noise the hiss is a field recording of an air conditioning unit in a parking garage. That's something I do quite often to give what would be a sterile digital recording more of an environmental texture, most of the time mixed quietly so it's fairly imperceptible. I have a beautiful one I made in a park a few years ago that I use quite a bit, for eg, and others with rain, cicadas, traffic etc. Air conditioning units, fridges, washing machines - anything mechanical is really interesting. Another good one is one I made outside the hospital across the road from me at 2 in the morning. If you aren't able to make your own then https://freesound.org/ has thousands of recordings you can use.

With the low passed stuff, I made a parallel channel for the bass and then put some really heavy overdrive on one of them, then bussed them and put the lowpass filter on the bus, with the Stereo tool with the low bypass up really high so it only picks up what's left of the overdrive's overtones. And the same for the kicks.

Anyway, thanks for listening and for your kind words. If you like this kind of thing, Burial is a good place to start and if you've heard his stuff, try Rhythm & Sound and the Echospace label (Deepchord, Variant) for more kind of dubbiness/abstraction.

I agree with Tom, I think you're onto something here. You've turned the misery of making it into something very cool. Even tho the beats are quite fast, its all strangely soothing.

I’ve been playing this for a few days now over the course of the week. I’ve taken it to my day job where I have chatting, machines humming, whirring and beeping. I’ve walked the streets in the morning on school days and had the chatter of kids and birds, and light traffic in the background, and I’ve driven around in the car with it. I think you’ve created something really cool. This is an album that sits nicely in the background, it doesn’t distract but it adds atmosphere and adds to the atmosphere. So much playability and longevity as each time it’s a little different. And yet on the face of it, there’s not that much going on, which is kinda great.

I think it was important to read the blurb and understand the concept going in. I didn’t feel the need to be critical, overanalyse or think too much. Just absorb and enjoy.

You can feel and hear the effort you put in this track, well done!!!!

On the one hand it sounds like a mystery, and the other hand it sounds like ehhhhh, everyday sounds...... I cannot put my finger on it, and that is the beauty of your track!
