Good guys. I remember years ago I bought these refills on disc from what I thought was a reputable online seller. The discs were just copied DVD-R's with dodgy looking inkjet printed covers. I emailed esoundz asking if this sounded normal to them and they sorted me out with a proper official boxed set. $29 is a steal.

I've had the Miroslav collection for a year or two now and I don't think I've ever used a single patch from it in a song.

In my opinion, they're pretty dated and limited, and not very friendly to use. They're from the old days before every-note sampling, round robins, detailed velocity layers, and other basic features that are common and expected in a good sample library nowadays. The result is that they're very restrictive, have to be loaded with reverb to cover their inadequacies, and tend to sound cheap and unconvincing.

Even for this price, you could probably do about as well with certain free libraries, especially with VST as an option now. If you're looking to spend money on a good set of orchestral sounds, I think you would be better off saving some more and investing in something more modern, whether it be Kontakt libraries, StringWerk, Softphonics refills, or something else.

If you ever change your mind, the Miroslav stuff seems to always go on sale for prices like this several times a year anymore, so you'll have more chances in the future.

bxbrkrz is bang on for me; I am currently doing some 1950s Ultra Lounge soundalikes, it needs to sound "vintage" and the Orkester and FSM sounds are too far below the line of quality I require. I have turned in paid work in the past and the only things I got called out on were the Orkester sounds; the client was right and Softphonics saved the day. That said, I only used Softphonics strings on that job, the rest was Orkester & FSM. The Miroslav clarinets and flutes sound immediately better than native Orkester or FSM IMO...I haven't tried anything else Miroslav, yet. StringWERK is 130euros!

Not a fan of Miroslav strings at all although someone has put together a few usable combinator string patches in the combinator factory sound bank ...Kudos.

Jfrichards.....fantastic work really like that. You've made them sound as real as they possibly can . Either you play strings or researched how they're played .....either way you can really hear how much work went into that!

I disagree when it comes to the Reason format. There are people who are really great at working with any library to make them sound great. Somewhere on this forum I posted a link to a guy who decided to get this library back out and did well known Debussy work.

I understand what you mean, but I don't think it's a worthwhile thing to bother with.

For at least a decade, I used to be one of the people who would spend countless hours painstakingly brute-forcing the sounds I wanted out of cheap libraries. I know that you can make Orkester sound amazing if you put a lot of time into it, and if you structure your composition around hiding its weaknesses. I convinced myself that I was better off without better instrument libraries since I could impress anyway, and it became a bit of an ego thing to be able to do so much with so little.

I eventually discovered that springing for some higher quality sounds has made composing and producing far more fun and inspiring, and more about just writing music, instead of being a thankless chore of trying to wrangle bad sounds into something where if you do it well enough, no one will even be able to tell how valiantly you struggled to make it sound as good as something that you could've done just in a few hours with better resources.

Consider this...

1 - Miroslav is a 10+ year refill. It does not have Keyswitching, does not take care of legato notes and it has quite a dated product.

2 - Stringwerk is now making a Sale. Quite worth it if you consider it's at the moment the best string app exclusive for Reason.

3 - With VST's the offer on Strings and Orchestra packs is simply huge. And the latest products are not only overhelming as they surpass any miroslav by far. 8dio, Vienna, Berlin, NI, etc. Even East West that imho is getting behind these is WAY better than Miroslav.

So at this moment, i'd cash those 29 in to get stringwerk or something more recent. IMHO.

PS.: anyone that is minimally serious about orchestral work, will have a bunch of different packs. I myself have East West, Miroslav, Stringwerk and am even thinking about getting the more recent 8dio (i'm still a bit in the fence because i need Kontact to run it). So if you go for miroslav, though i'm sure it will get dusty with time, it can still be used for some stuff.

I required something pretty light on cpu for now to work up some sketches for the next few weeks until I can get a more powerful computer...no way was I gonna part with $200 for Miroslav, but 30 is pocket change for now
