a Rack Extension emulation of this synth would be most welcome, no ?

Synapse Audio, Audiorealism, Blamsoft ?

I thought that Roland had made a SH-101 RE then!

I used to want a SH-101 RE, but then vst support came along and now TAL-Bassline-101 fills all my SH-101 needs. I think the D16 Lush-101 is a bit of an overkill, and it's thrice the price, so no thank you.

Hmmm... TAL-Bassline 101 sounds awesome... x_X more gassing for me. In the sound exemples I can hear it sound close to some of Royksopp' basslines...

TAL Bassline 101 is an amazing synth, agree that Lush 101 feels a bit OTT. TAL also make a great synth that does an impression of a Juno 60, and TAL Sampler is all about emulating the reduced sample rates and DACs of old hardware samplers - it has lots of free sample content and there is a big Hollowsun library available for it for free too. Boom.

SH101 was the synth I couldn't afford as a kid because we were poor. I lusted after one my whole childhood until I saw the Juno 6

D'you think the TAL Bassline 101 stacks up against the VST Roland SH-101?

EDIT - Just listened to a TAL Bassline 101 patch demo on You Tube and the same for the Roland SH-101 VST and no comparison to me. The actual Roland SH-101 Plug-Out was thicker, warmer and sounded just better.

now that Reason supports vst is going to be hard see vst ported to RE (because you can use it)

what prop needs to do is to improve the Rack so vst can be placed like RE

I think it's possible with a good zoon

I haven't tried the Roland plugout version of the 101, but I understand there has been compatability and cpu issues (last time I checked), and the TAL bassline 101 is highly regarded as a very decent, efficient, authentic and reasonably priced alternative so for 60 bucks you can't realy go wrong with it. I also have TAL's take on the Juno 60, which indeed is an excellent soft synth as well.

That’s a cool idea, some sort of auto detection for vsts that can scale their UI. So reason auto fits and “locks” the vst window to fit the rack/combinator depending on what the user uses. I feel like that’s totally doable. It could be an option under preferences. A “merge vst” function. I feel like it would only work with the scaleable vsts but that is most of them that I have come across

So what do you guys think is the best existing synth in Reason for nailing the SH-101 sound?

Good question. The SH-101 was a bass synth and it was monophonic (only one note played at a time) so I'm thinking Subtractor off the top of my head with just 1 oscillator activated and the polyphony reduced to 1 but I'm no expert. I get the feeling it would need sticking in a combinator with some effects (chorus or unison perhaps?) to thicken the sound up.

I wouldn't mind seeing if someone could replicate (maybe on Subtractor but on Thor if need be) a patch off the SH-101. That would be interesting. Let's do the sound test.

EDIT - I've just read however, the original hardware version had no patch memory so unsure if it had presets or not so if we were doing a preset comparison it would have to be the Software Plug-Out version patch.

I remember someone saying that Tres was the closest thing in Reason. I like Tres, it can get nice & beefy & phat but I've never really seen it as a SH-101 emulation

yes i remember watching a demo tutorial and the creators of the Tres definitely had the SH -101 in mind when they created it.

I looked at the Tres video on the Propellerhead site yesterday and they said in the video it's close to a Roland SH-101. ;)

Sorry Eski has pretty much said the same thing above. I replied without reading a previous reply obviously.

The only thing Tres and the SH101 might have in common is possibly that Tres has a filter mode that is similar to the SH101 (Japan, lowpass).

The SH101 is a fairly simple affair with a single oscillator, but with the option to output saw, pulse (with variable width), and a sub octave (-1 oct square, -2 oct square, or -2 oct pulse) at the same time. It only has a single EG that can be sent to the filter and amp. The amp can also be switched to gate control.

The Microbrute is surprisingly similar. It doesn't sound the same, but it's also a 1VCO synth with mixable waveforms, a sub, only one env., and so on.

Close enough for me. As much as I dig the sounds of my favorites artist, everytime I make something close, I think... "I've heard that before, is that what I wanna do, more of the same, and not as good ?"

Enough of chasing the past ;)

Lush goes on Sale all the time...you can get it for $69 more or even less during some sales. Keep an eye for New years...no grantee but not impossible.
My opinion is that Propellerhead REASON needs a complete rewrite!
P.S: people should stop saying "No it won't happen" when referring to a complete rewrite of REASON. I have 3 letters for ya....VST
