Yes I have tried Audiomatic, but I'm sure today I saw an RE posted that did this very thing, but I can not find it...strange!

Thanks for that EdGrip, the Phonetic Vintage Phone Simulator was the one I saw...
Phonetic is so good. I often use it to centralise a certain percentage of a sound. Better than bitcrush options in many ways.

or simply use these IR files: https://fokkie.home.xs4all.nl/IR.htm#speakers
Beside this one that was already mentioned:

I like FutzBox.

And there are also some free VSTS available, that make your sound old. And you can try to create your own by removing high end, add noise gated by the original signal, EQ and maybe more...

Reason12, Win10
This is exactly what you need:

It designed specifically to emulate old telephone systems and their speakers.
Futzbox and Audiomatic do a lot more different types of sounds and maybe you will get close, but nothing beats this RE for making those old-style telephone/old picture sounds.

Phonetic is great for this. Also Futzbox is the runner-up.

I am now the owner of Futzbox. Lovely device!
A simple way of acheiving the Futzbox 'Sim' mode is to find some IR filters to load into the RV7000 Mk II in convolution mode.
There's all sorts of convolution filters out there ranging from radio speakers to old telephone equipment. It won't model distortion but you could use Scream4 for that aspect of the sound. So there's no need to buy anything if you can put what you require in a combi.
Having said that I just trialled Futzbox and bought it for the convenience, that, I think, is where Futzbox's value lies. It's a tool that is easy to use and simply covers this kind of specific task. For €30 I didn't mind paying for it I'd never have bought it at 'full price' though.

The telephone sound contains 2 elements:
- distortion
- bandpass filter (less highs and less lows)
You can create this effect yourself in any DAW.
