First things first: thanks to Luapy for catching this!

Not sure if anyone has caught the recent Propellerhead artist story on DJ Pierre, but it looks like he's using Audio Realism's forthcoming ABL3.1 update. Nice!!!! Check it out:

Here's the actual artist story, where it appears at the 5:52 mark:

The 3.1 update? I dunno... I mean, it's cool Audio Realism got him early access and stuff. It's not even in the shop, yet.

Kind of sad to see this actually.

I really liked ReBirth and think it should come bundled with Reason.
I've no experience with Audio Realism's ABL3 rack extension but it looks good.

Perhaps more importantly though: DJ Pierre was a legend, and now l see him in the vid trotting out boring music.

Also he is commending Daft Punk, who were super duper innovators and brilliant musicians, true. BUT they were commercial, they were glitzy glam, they were essentially men in suits if you ask me.

So, what i'm saying is, it's sad to see one of the greatest personages in Acid House (1) not realising the scene is dead (2) not realising he no longer has the spark (3) turning to glam acts like Daft Punk and not realising that is ironic.

One resounding point was made in the vid: It's not just the music, it's the DJ that played it 4 times, who can be credited as co-innovator of Acid House. The take-home message there for me is, it's the crowd that made the scene, too.

Daft Punk crowd = champagne socialist socialite trendies and people that don't actually like music. People that upwardly inflect the ending of each spoken sentence. Crypto-liberals with hatefilled stares, because you are in a lower earnings bracket, therefore you are scum. They pay your taxes so that you can stand before them and yabber on about aesthetics at a house party? What!

And so now you'll have an acid bassline - instant hands in the air from trendies that don't even like music. The bassline will be phasered, flanged, excited, distorted, hell, even delayed. The kick drum will be perfect, selected out of a pro sample pack of 50,000 kicks. The unnecessary strings overlaid will be filter sweeped. The vocals will be mangled - woah what the hell was that vocal originally? Who cares. It's overwrought, it's trendy, the scene is dead. Sad :(

Cool story, HepCat. If I ever take the Alive 2007 CD out of my car stereo long enough to put anything else in, I'll let you know if it turns out to be as good.

I think it's just the changing face of the dance / electronic music scene. DJ Pierre is a legend. But the stuff he pioneered is about 30 years old! So much has happened in that time. Not much is pioneering anymore. His music doesn't sound very exciting at all these days. But it does sound very DJ Pierre. How relevant that is comes down to individual I guess. Personally I find most dance music boring these days. But that's probably because I'm an old jaded git who has been listening to this stuff for 30+ years myself. I'm more interested to see what DJ Pierre is using & doing than the actual music itself.

The way I look at it is like this: if a major historical figure in the music industry uses your wares, it's a massive accomplishment (for said makers of the wares) regardless of whether or not the artist in question is releasing anything relevant right now.

I'm sure when Eric Clapton or Keith Richards publicly endorse a guitar, said maker of said guitar has every right to be proud - even if everything Eric and Keith have done in the past decades is shite compared to their "golden age of relevance".

Audio Realism and Propellerhead should be proud of this, is all I'm saying.

Completely agree. Now if only we could get Richard Devine on board. Actually I'd love to see what Richard Devine could do with Reason. I wonder if he does use it? He appears to own & use pretty much everything else!! Reason must be in there somewhere. But DJ Pierre is exciting to me because I know who he is & the history. I lot of Propellerhead featured artists I've never heard of.

Well I think it's a good thing PH are putting time into these artist features and letting people know that Reason is at work in studios around the world. That's what potential new customers need to see. More of this!

Yeah I used to wonder if the big names were using it or if I should switch DAWs to reach the next level... It's been nice whenever I see it.

Yes, I still hope that PH some day will make an artist feature with Daniel Kandi. Maybe the problem is, that he still uses Reason 3 and this wouldn't show off very well ;-)

Great interview! I think he makes some very good points, about music being too technically focused these days and I like that he talks about all the stages the first records needed to pass to become what it did, crediting Ron Hardy for persevering with the sound. Also to talk about all the people that have been inspired by what he did, which I think is one of the nicest things about getting your music out there as you never know what will come out of it :)

Pierre's output in the early days completely almost completely defined the genre. For me he is a big hero and his music has inspired many of the tracks I have made. I played on the same bill as him back in 2012 but unfortunately didn't get to meet him as he seems to have his head screwed on the right way from the things he says in this video. I'm glad that he is still a Reason user after all these years!

Daniel Kandi should be awesome! Whatever version he uses...

Loved this interview with DJ Pierre

I just mailed Audio Realism after watching it as to when the ABL3 upgrade is happening!

"Yes, we are about to release an upgrade for Reason for $9. It will include pattern grid edit and extended randomizer modes, plus other improvements. And it should be released within a few days.."

I aint a snob. My complaint was that the vibe has been twisted too far and it's gone to the snobs. Sorry for not liking what you like.

I like the old format best, where i fire off words into the void and others do the same, without cross-inhibition because that's irony. At least l explain my views.

Let me illustrate further. Sophisticated production and every box ticked:

(or if you prefer, substitute with whatever some time honoured artist is doing today)

Compare with proper acid house:

Notice it's got a joie de vivre that goes beyond SH101 or 303, past all the FX units, beyond even synths, it's like the sound of the world in union (it even has some kind of Kurdish or Armenian melody, with a social justice vocal hook, plus a whole lot of other random snazzy hooks, it's a real fun journey and an eye opener).

So as you can see, we have fallen down.
