DCAM ChanComp VS FET compressor
I read some people make the claim that the DCAM ChanComp is the poor man's FET compressor. Are there qualities that these two compressors share? Is the DCAM a "good enough" option/substitute for someone on a budget?
I think the chan comp is supposed to emulate the Urei 1176.

I thought I remembered reading someone saying the ChanComp was the poor man's FET. Perhaps I am remembering the wrong one. Can anyone think what the "poor man's FET" might be?
I dunno if there is or not, but I don't think the FET is like a 1176 too much. I think personally, FWIW, it's unique and should be considered for you arsenal as such. I got it on sale, I use it a fair amount, but find it REALLY fiddly in some ways, not at all like any 1176 emu I've ever used.
REALLY touchy. I'll think I have it just right, and it will be too much. Not saying I don't like it, but it's difficult to gauge at times.

I never had the opportunity to compare Softube's FET with the original hardware (never touched the 1176 TBH). But all I've read so far the FET seems to be a good emu. It is not an easy compressor to work with (compared with some others we can chose from in Reason), but I have never felt that it is much more difficult to program than the ChanComp.
The main difference between ChanComp and FET is that the ChanComp has fixed ratio push buttons (like the original 1176) and the FET has a continuous knob including a "all in" position. I understand that all the other knobs on the FET (detector section, parallel inject) and ChanComp (master section) are additional features aside the original controls of the 1176.
As I said: I cannot confirm that the Softube FET is close to the original but I think it's certainly the closest emu of the 1176 we have in reason. And in the end the key controls of both the FET and ChanComp are very similar.

Same here, have used 1176s forever, both hardware and software, and am totally happy with the FET.miscend wrote:Not used the Dcam chan comp. But I have an 1176 fet clone. The Softube FET is one hell of a compressor, they did a marvellous job of emulating the character of the sound.

I'm assuming FET would win that shootout... unless price allows ChanComp to shoot more bullets.bpmorton wrote:So it sounds like we need a Comp shootout between the Chan Comp and FET!
But as an owner of ChanComp, I'm glad to hear that it is comparable to FET, in some regards.

I wouldn't assume that FET would win. Maybe we need a blind test and a forum vote on which examples sound better.
Dcam ChanComp reminds me of the Waves RComp - it can do boring compression well but can also get that classic house drumloop pump.
The FET is a lot brighter sounding and a lot more 'touchy' with the sound as mentioned above. It also has some nice 'secret' modes inbetween 20 and all that i like very much and i find more balanced as there is too much of a difference between a ratio of 20 and ALL.
The FET is unlike anything i've heard before, the only other compressor that sounds kind of like it is by softube as well (the Dyna-Mite) which is even more touchy!!

Can't speak to the ChanComp. I just submitted a lengthy post on the FET a few minutes ago, fwiw...
