Tritone has to be tamed on the input and played around with, the presets are harsh but its a really nice device once you play around with it.Auryn wrote:
Tritone and Mutagen were dissapointments to me, got on board the hype train but never use them, too harsh.
Favorite distortion units?

Does Disperser count as a distortion?
Most recent track: resentment (synthwave) || Others: on my YouTube channel •ᴗ•
I'd definitely throw these devices into my favorites:
Etch
D16 Group
Kuassa distortion bundle

The air raid audio distort wasn’t on the list, the multi band distortion by air raid audio has some of the same types.
But the air raid distort module is soooo powerful for a cheap distortion unit. The pre eq is my favorite feature on a RE plus it has an envelope follower
All of air raid audios stuff is top shelf.
Oh and another great unique distortion unit is kiloheartz phase distortion. It’s a distortion that’s similar to rob papens quad phase distortion modes. At least that’s what I’d compare the sound to.
Phase distortion by khs is a unique way to make any sound into a FM style sound, it works great when making growls. I was very surprised as to how strange the phase distortion sounds, an easy way to make monsters

Thanks for sharing, all. I hadn't considered a lot of these yet so this poll is quite useful.
To that end, I'll share some thoughts too:
FutsBox is a very specific distortion. I've used it for adjusting movie dialog to sound like it was coming through devices (telephones, boomboxes, speakers, etc) and it really does that job super admirably. Obviously this makes it useful for 'lo-fi' as well, though I've found that usually a little sounds better than a lot.
Not on the list but the Runciter filter from the VST versions of Uhbik is such a lovely and unique digital filter that is capable adding just a bit or full absolute units of distortion, and does both very well and with specific character. EDIT: I didn't spend much time with the RE version of Runciter, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

And a recent free unity : https://shop.propellerheads.com/rack-ex ... overdrive/
For the extremly harsh audio signal .

For you folks who have not have seen the BeatCRUSH video.... have a listen:
... Pretty damn close to sounding Analog, IMO. It's the first RE I think to use.
Snares and High Freq Percussion Loves this thing. Vocals, too.
- Bit by Bit Control, reverse bits..!
- Dual Multi-Mode Filters - that Sound Great, IMO
- Stereo Modulation - that Remembers "Stereo" [PAN]
- and, Check the CVs on the Back.
If BeatCRUSH was a hardware device? wow!!

For me, kHs Faturator sounds very pleasant. It instantly adds fat warm grit to clean synth sounds. This device is usable also without distortion controls engaged, the "color" parameter acts as colouring eq so you can fatten up the original sounds also this way.
I have almost everything and in the end I use mostly Decimort and Devastor from D 16 Group. Also there is something more new, called 1-Bit Converter. A very different one.

As a longtime hi-gain distortion junkie, I can tell you that the free Overdrive and Distortion RE's from "That Music Company" are must-haves. They are honestly better than most of the paid RE's and VSTs I have tried. Even the mighty Scream4 -which I love- sometimes gets swapped out for Mr.Overdrive (hate the name but damn, it's a great unit).
Also, if you are a fan of old-fashioned "driven to breaking point" style of lo-fi distortion, the PMS-20 filter is worth a look. Unfortunately it loses a bit of solidity in the extreme low end so I can't recommend it for 808's/subs if you need them to hit hard, but for darker chugging, crunchy, broken-up type sounds it is pretty great.

Mr. Overdrive is a silly name, for a monster of a device.

Since I'm really in love with the various forms of Kuassa distortion and D16's Devastor 2 I voted Other.

Ha just found out that Mr. Overdrive is great! Thanks guys!
The name and color mislead one to believe that this a tube screamer type of effect.
