Product details
At the heart of FM4 is our digital FM modelling engine which has been carefully modelled on original hardware units from the popular DX series. Every aspect of the hardware — from envelope curves to sine-table sizes and quantisation errors to digital-to-analogue converters — has been meticulously analysed. Combined with complex math and countless hours of tweaking parameters, FM4 provides the same gritty sound as the hardware. Moreover we have given FM4 a carefully thought-out, stripped-down, yet powerful, user interface. With every parameter being available on a single page, alike traditional analogue synthesisers, FM4 facilitates a workflow with minimal overhead, encourages exploration, and allows for faster programming yielding instant sonic results.
Features:
  • Four operators configurable in eight different routings
  • Three sound engines modelled on 1980s hardware units
  • Eight waveforms derived from classic FM synths
  • 2x, 3x, and 4x polyphonic unison
  • Numerous CV inputs/outputs for external control
  • Unique drift parameter for creating organic sounds
  • Operator wave phase modes: sync, free & random
  • LFO with 5 waveforms and tempo sync
  • Pitch decay envelope with varying curves
  • 100% free of farty brass-sounds
All product names used are trademarks of their respective owners, and reference to these here in no way constitutes an association or affiliation with Primal Audio. All trademarks are solely used to identify the products whose sound was studied during the development of FM4.
And just €19!

I'm torn because I'm really liking some of the sounds, but there seems to be quite a bit of white noise/something noise in the background of a number of them which makes me think there's something not quite right - almost like the residual noise you get on the tail of a low-quality sampled sound.  There's a patch called "Noizy Bugger" which is pretty self-aware of them - the issue for me is it's not just that patch.

I'll say this, they're getting the marketing right.  It's good to see that in the shop.

***EDIT - I see the noise is directly associated to the noise lo-fi button.  So...duh to me.  A little heavy on DSP but a good value for $25.

The noise is from the lofi quality setting. The lofi quality is actually the main reason I'm excited for this synth.

haha, see this:
  • 100% free of farty brass-sounds
their marketing (especially prize wise) and the sound samples are really teasing me. I hope the noise issue is not a big deal or will get fixed before the intro price runs out. Edit: can we turn the lo-fi off? It has three settings. As I see it in this discussion, several actually like the lo-fi nature.
I really liked the samples, so I might instabuy as well.

Instabuy. The lo-fi grittiness makes this synth irresistible.

$25!!!!!! a that price I don't have to try it.

After this synth, PH will have to add PX7 to the Synthetic Rig in order  to users that don't have it
decide to get it. lol

Before I use up my trial unnecessarily, can someone tell me a particular reason I would get this if I already have PX7? For example, is it truly "a breeze" to create sounds?

YES
My opinion is that Propellerhead REASON needs a complete rewrite!
P.S: people should stop saying "No it won't happen" when referring to a complete rewrite of REASON. I have 3 letters for ya....VST

It sounds amazing! Love "mode III" - really a nice touch of lo-fi.

Overall a very smart architecture design as well.

Now for the "low hanging fruit" feature suggestions:

- Sine wave for the LFO (sometimes, triangle just won't do ;) )

- Noise wave for the Oscs (moar noise, always nice!)

- CV input for the Feedback control

Tried it - bought it - love it!

The combinator presets are a minor dissapointment in my point of view.
I wish they had a special FM4 backdrop and more assigned macro controls.
But maybe that's just me.

Anyway, tweaking FM4 is total fun!

I have to agree with you.  That said, for the price (at least the intro price), it's hard to be mad because of the meager selection of Combi.

I'll likely be buying this!

Such an awesome synth. It looks great, sounds great. This synth will definitely help me get more into FM synthesis. Would seriously buy it at 3 times the price. Well done Primal Audio.
