That looks like something I need for triggering chords from my drum pad controller! It looks pretty useful. Of course someone will probably complain about there being "another CV device". But I'm guessing those naysayers don't know how to use these nifty gadgets! :)

Reminds me of AutoTheory. Without the progression saving possibility.

I believe the word on the street is that SDK 1 has been retired.

This looks pretty interesting, especially for the 'chord challenged' like myself :D

there is remote mapping problem with this one. you can't map the slot selector but all the Shift slot knobs are mappable. So this means that you need to select witch of the 12 slots you want to use whit you mouse then you can control the rest of the device from controller.

Code: Select all

Doubt it. I grow tired of new cv devices myself but this doesn't count as one. No real use to me as a keyboard player, but people have been asking for chord memory for a while. Congrats to those who've been craving this.

really not a fan of the way it works :/ you have to setup a chord for each keyboard note; it doesn't just scale with the keyboard?  did i miss something?  like, if i play a C3 with chord additions on it i get a chord... but then if i play a C#3 i get a plain C3 note.  what

Too bad that the demo video doesn't really show us much.  Nice of them to define "harmony" for us, though!  ;)
I think my auto chord needs are met with AutoTheory, and without a proper demo video, I'm left wondering how this thing is any better.  AutoTheory even has tweakable strumming variations, which is a really nice feature.  ChordSet seems to be missing that type of feature.  I'm pretty happy with AutoTheory.  Can anyone who is trialing it (or has purchased it) explain how ChordSet is any better or different than AutoTheory?  I'm not going to "try" this device unless I think I might want it.  I don't ever try anything unless I am seriously considering to purchase it.
Players are to MIDI what synthesizers are to waveforms.

What I like about ChordSet is it's smaller footprint. I have AutoTheory—so my needs are pretty well met for triggering chords. But it's so large and I rarely need to access all of the parameters. This is a good, compact device.

That would be sad for us, Reason 6.5 users... Well, we'll have to upgrade someday I guess! :)

If it operates in a way similar to Auto Theory then you would actually need to enter particular notes for it to work. Try a bunch of random notes in your Matrix and see if you can get a bit of sound happening, if so then that's it, otherwise the routing looks fine but I don't know about the device settings - Auto Theory is just too good for me to need to try it.

Finally.

This should be a stock device, to be honest.

Switch "Note On" to cv and it should work. It's because your note input is triggered by the matrix.

You need to move the switch below 'note on' from 'key' to 'cv'...

EDIT: Drawat just beat me to it :)

The point of creating patches is to set up your own scales/ set of chord triggers. If you want preset scales you should check the factory patches. Saw some scale patches in the video.

It's not really meant to be anything like AutoTheory. The two have some overlap with being able to trigger chords, but where ChordSet differs is the mapping of chords is a lot more flexible. AutoTheory maps things to premade scales it seems (could be wrong here, I haven't actually tried either of theses). ChordSet on the other hand gives you complete customization of a set of chords to trigger.

So what ChordSet can do that AutoTheory can't is have both a Cmaj chord and a C dom7 chord in the same instance. You could 12 different chords for the same note if you so desired. It also lets you map out progressions to whatever keys you wish allowing you to assign a I-V-vi-IV progression (for example: C-G-Amin-F) to four consecutive keys Like C-F which could be pretty useful for anyone doing keyboard splits. I do agree though, some type of strum feature would be nice for more natural sounding chord playing.

Edit: Forgot to mention all the different cv stuff on the back. This thing can send 7 different notes to 7 different instruments with complete control over what note goes where.

Besides the things already pointed out (cv/note switch), ChordSet will only respond to notes in the C2-B2 range. In the screenshots you provided, the matrix pattern is in the C3-B3 range and won't trigger ChordSet.

I'm finding that often when I'm playing keys, sometimes a single note is triggered in place where there is usually a chord. Is this happening with anybody else?

Looks good. And easy to use. A simple version of the other chord devices. Might jump back in and get this.

I tried to download it to give it a try but encountered server errors a few times so gave up.

I was getting that too Joey, it was a little off putting but I need to do more tests. Seems like a useful tool overall though, think I'll be buying it.

Does anyone know if it can simply transpose a given chord the full range of your controller, just like basic chord memory on classic synths? I couldn't find a way to do it - even when I hooked up the 'transpose CV' in - but I only had a spare 20mins and didn't read the manual, will try again tomoz.
