Primal Audio is working on a new FM synth that should compete with the PX7, called FM4 which is already available on the iPad. Apparently, one of features that sets the FM4 apart from the PX7 is that it is not limited to sine waves. The iPad version also has an arp and a unison mode. Sounds exciting!
They're calling for beta testers below.

That link seems to be broken..
It will be interesting for sure. Certainly back in the day the TX81Z had a very different character to the DX7, maybe this will be the new TX81Z!

Hope this link works...
In case it doesn't: the dev said this on the gearslutz forum:

In case it doesn't: the dev said this on the gearslutz forum:
- FM4 has 8 waveforms as Melody303 mentioned.
- FM4 has three different engine models and output stage models meaning it has the dirty character that a lot of the old fm synths had.
- FM4 has a build in unison mode
- FM4 is a lot simpler overall. Envelopes are ADSR and the keyboard tracking is simplified. I personally think that the amount of control the DX7 and PX7 has over key tracking is way over the top.

A TX81Z clone was what I was considering for my next project as soon as my current one is done. But it looks like this is being well handled by Primal Audio.raymondh wrote:Certainly back in the day the TX81Z had a very different character to the DX7, maybe this will be the new TX81Z!

This looks and sounds super cool. I still have a DX100 which has a certain sound I just happen to like very much.

Here is a demo I have made with sounds I am making for the upcoming FM4 RE called FM Thunder (well I had to call it something).
This is a fun synth and a pretty easy way into FM synthesis.

That saw sound around 2:10 is incredible. I am about to buy Tres but im thinking that this might be my last synth for a while. I got six of them and pretty much serves me well. If this demo and a couple of others are just as good I will probably breakdown and buy. Sounds awesome though. Thx BeneBenedict wrote:

Amazing what you can do with a couple of UnisonsMDTerps2015 wrote:That saw sound around 2:10 is incredible.
FM4 > RV-7 > Scream > Unison > Unison > Compressor

It was really good. It sounds like something off of a hip hop track. I think i might have to get this when it comes if its not 100 bucks.Benedict wrote:

Interesting chain there. Never thought of using two unisons back to back like that. Also reverb at the beginning, eh? And compressor at the end? You are throwing all conventional chaining out the window, I see! Your demo sounds great.Benedict wrote:

Thanks
I have definitely been experimenting with different ways. Used to be I'd put Synth > Chorus > Delay > Reverb over and over.
I started to think this didn't have to be set in stone after seeing some people doing stuff that struck me as just plain silly, but their results were different from what I always get. Now I realize that you can get very different sounds from arranging the same units in different configurations. The feature in Reason 8 that lets you Shift-Drag units without re-wiring makes this far easier to just try.
Because FM isn't exactly a fat sound in itself I had to come up with ways to build on the raw sound. Distortions are popular so I figured I'd use one in this to bully up the sound. It then struck me that if I popped the RV-7, which is very fat, before the drive then I'd be boosting a far more complex signal so more harmonics.
In this instance I didn't want to use the Unison built into FM4. That left making many instances of the synth which is a PITA as well as a CPU drag or the little red Unison. Unison is a cool device but has some limits, one being that at 100% wet it loses punch as everything is dragged right out there. At 50% mix you still get both, but obviously not as big. I figured use two with different Detune amounts which in effect gives you 32 voices + the original.
The Compressor is at the end as all that fattening does make the sound a bit flabby The Comp is only to give it a bit more bite by changing the envelope a tiny bit.

As far as I am aware, every RE or update, developed after SDK 2 came out is SDK2
