lol you guys.. Most musicians I know couldn't even tell you what an FM synth is, let alone care. Glad you get my point 
If they want dead simple, and they aren't knowledgeable about synthesis or recording, GarageBand is actually a great start. Soundtrap is free and also good for getting started and great for collaboration.
