Flac compatibility

Have any feature requests? No promise they'll get to Reason Studios, but you can still discuss them here.

I love the MP3 features of reason 12, but would love to see Flac files supported on both import and export.

I'm storing some of my samples as Flac these days, which reduces storage requirements to around 50%

This would be a great qol feature.

Just a nudge to say that this feature would be so helpful.

As there were no replies, I searched the forum and can now see a few people asked for this feature.

Yes, FLAC (and ogg) import/export options have been requested (and ignored) since years. I think I first asked/read about it in the old PUF. So at least for about a decade this rather simple to implement request has been given no priority.

Based on how long it took them to add MP3 I reckon we'll have FLAC by the end of the decade. ;p

For MP3 one could argue that they waited for the patent to expire so they would not have to pay extra royalties, but FLAC/ogg are free from those, so they could have included the BSD licensed libraries right from the start without any concerns.

FLAC support would be awesome because I could use my 2TB foley sound archive with Reason's devices like the grain device. It's permissively licensed and already supported by a lot of well known DAWs and by most JUCE-based plugins.

You can use FLAC files in Reason already , the only thing you cannot do is export as FLAC. but I am happy just using another app for that.

I am on MAC so maybe it is different for Windows.

I never checked on my Mac but it definitely doesn't work on Windows.

Can you import flac files to devices like Grain?

Yes it works fine.

I sample a lot and most of those are flac, never had a problem. Seem to remember reading FLAC is OS depenedent so probably why it does not work in Windows.

Maybe there is a workaround. With Audacity on Mac you have to install FFMPEG Libs to get it to read those files, so would have thought something similar is possible for Reason.

I can confirm that loading flac files into a device like Grain works fine on macOS.

So supporting flac should be extended for Windows.

It looks like Reason already has FLAC encoding and decoding functionality built into the application because they use FLAC for the monolithic project file (when embedding all media in the .reason file): viewtopic.php?t=7524985

This is starting to look like an oversight on Windows?
