[Finished] Curved Automation (Petition)

Have any feature requests? No promise they'll get to Reason Studios, but you can still discuss them here.

And while we're on the subject, you can already draw automation on the grid, but you cannot QUANTIZE existing automation events to the grid.
Add to the growing feature suggestion list…
;)
Adding quantizeation to automation points would be good. I guess the issue might be what to do if there are a lot of points and they more than one would end up at the same place.
Wait, is this not a thing??
Even audio is quantized
If this is the case, I hope automation is taken a look at.
Was using ableton and having it in the sequencer is a fun way to add LFO style shapes to short sounds like an envelope.

+1 to curved automation. I had that back in the Cool Edit days. It's really simple: volume is logarithmic, not linear. Natural fades are curved.

Dear Propellerhead Software!

Please add the possibility of curved automation for the sequencer, just like newer instruments have curves in their envelopes built-in, too.

Thank you!

P.S. Money is already saved up for the next paid update in the future.

(Personally, I'd still love a Midi/CV out from the sequencer, but that's another story.)

There was a line tool in the sequencer (if I'm remember right).
Please, return it!

It's still there. In Edit Mode, hit 'W' to select the Pencil Tool, go to the velocity pane and hit Ctrl. The big plus sign is the line tool.

or a math lane could work for me, similar to the pattern lane but applies math to the automation lane
Wouldn't that be a little too Stephen Hawking or Einstein to work out though?

I was wondering for a sec, like how on earth he did that - (yeah drawing everything point by point) ~ though really wonder now what keeps them from making these, especially when he mentioned how other DAWs have such things.
OH I forgot all about that thing! Great call!
I had it as part of my template back in reason 5 or 6...sometime before REs.
I'm gonna re-do one of my starter templates and put that back in.
That's fantastic.

Any examples or links so I can get the gist of what you mean?

Well, yes, sometimes it works but the behaviour is inconsistent. Unlike every other function the line modifier doesn't work on selected notes. It will be applied to all notes it's drawn under even if you only select one note.

Right. You'd have to select the notes you want to apply it to, move them to a new note lane then apply. That'd be a bit of a pain to do often.

heck lets do this. in my picture i drew the time ruler and three lanes. you interact with the uppermost lane as if it was a pattern automation lane but your choosing a math. the other two show the regualr automation lane before and after the math is applied. since it uses the same reason sequencer input methods i think most folks would understand whats happening pretty quickly

Yes, but it doesn't work with automation lines (or I didn't find a way to do it), only works for notes.

Fades are curved if the VCA/volume/fader is linear, and linear if the VCA etc is log.
In Reason (as most DAWs), the fader is already log, so a linear automation curve works as expected for volume control.

But there are many cases where you'll want to override that behavior because at the very least automation doesn't always control volume!

Indeed, automation is vector based so you only need two points to determine a line.
Thus there is no need for a "line tool" to draw only two points. If you DO draw a line, depending on the Prefs setting for automation, in most cases it will result in two automation points being added. The exception would be with Automation Cleanup set to "Minimum".

I'd prefer something similar to this. Also would be handy to have auto fades when doing editing for certain types of work.

Oh hey, looks like they probably already planned it, so maybe this thread was kinda unnecessary? x D Sorry about that, heh...
