Hey guys,
What’s the best multi purpose compressor I can get for Reason? Ideally to also do some multi band compression?
Thanks,
Erik

without question the most versatile/configurable compressor available in the RE format is the mace compressor by labone. if that's too much control and you prefer something more straight forward to use the FRG from mcdsp is worth a test drive though i think a better option than the FRG at $50 would be the buscomp and chancomp by fxpansion which you can get both for $60.

There are also a bunch of REs that are probably better described as dynamics processors than compressors as they offer more functionality than just traditional downwards compression. Examples include 4-dyn by flower audio which has multi-band capability, dyn-4 by lectric panda also multiband, splex also multiband and a bit of a forgotten gem imo, dq by uberwave which is a selectable single band kind of thing, the selig leveler is a very innovative dynamics processor that's very useful on the master bus, carve eq by ochen k which is technically not a compressor but you should def give it a try in some situations you'd normally use a compressor, valley people dynamite by softube which is a model of a famous analog dynamics unit that has some very unique functionality many people really like, red rock makes multi-band comp and limiter with izotope style visual feedback and as well as a few compressors people seem to like, and the ozone and kuassa maximizers are both perfectly good at what they're for.

in my opinion the fxpansion comps (and transient shaper too), dq by uberwave, and 4-dyn by flower audio are some of the best RE dynamics tools and they're reasonably priced too. FRG by mcdsp and selig leveler are also terrific if a little pricey. be sure to try ochen k's carve eq ducker and sonicbits pump (or reasonistas sidechain reaction for the same idea as pump with more tweakability) as well as you may find they are better than a comp for certain situations that you would normally reach for a comp, plus all three are very easy to use and very reasonably priced.

Honestly if I could only use one compressor I would go for FRG 4RE. There are many great compressors but personally that's the one I couldn't live without.

Considering what I use the most... It's FRG... But all others have their time and their place.

Compressors are tricky beasts and usually do ONE thing really well and kind of do OK (or terribly) at anything else.

So... there isn't ONE compressor that will do it all. Ok... there are a few that make claims that they are all-rounders.. like U-he Presswerk - but to be honest, I've tried it... and I gave it a good work out... and even that has a tendency of being great for ONE (maybe TWO things). If you are on a tight budget... get Waves Scheps Omni Channel - that comes with 3 competent compressors - plus you get a great EQ, Gate, Saturation etc thrown in.

Here is my short-list... each give you a great ONE result:

- Softube LA-2A... great for levelling out BASS, SYNTHS and VOCALS.
- Softube FET... great for side-chaining drums to BASS or PADS channels etc.
- Waves API-2500... for giving you solid... tight... kicking... drum busses (contenders inc. E.Labs Arouser, Waves DBX-160 etc.).
- Waves SSL G-Master Buss Compressor... glue your drums buss, glue your bass buss, glue everything (contenders Cytomic The Glue, E.Labs Arouser)
- Eventide Omnipressor... for out and out attitude and aggression. It's rude and unkind - and you can over do so easily - but it's got a great musical sounding ggggrrrrr if you like that sort of thing.

As for multi-band compression - I'm going to stick my neck out and get shot. I don't like them. There are better ways to compress across the spectrum... like parallel bussing and treating lows with a tight MONO and clean chain... and the upper regions with a more dynamic and fun ear candy processing. Trying to do it in one processor restricts you from doing all the other stuff. I've watched a lot of tutorials by various pro's that I respect and they all seem to have the same opinion... but I would like to hear other people's opinions on this.

Anyway - it's taken me years to totally appreciate the rights and wrongs of compression. Just don't expect one compressor will do it all.

Yup - and you can grab this classic collection of 10 compressors from JRRshop for $24.36 with code 'GROUP':

(If this guy had a Saturday morning show I would totally watch it - right after Pee-Wee's Playhouse.

EDIT: They also have a multiband version for $41.

If versatile is all you are looking for I think Mace by LAB:ONE RECORDINGS is about as versatile as it gets in the RE format but you'd need to setup your own way of doing mutliband

I find it interesting that people (in this thread and in others) recommend the Mace Compressor. I tried it some time ago, gave it a couple of chances and I hated it. Maybe I used it wrong, but I just couldn't get anything I liked from it. And also the GUI didn't gel with me.
Oh well, just goes to show everyone has to try stuff out for themselves.
Opinions are interesting to read, but they don't mean much when it comes to figuring out what you like. Of course that's just my opinion.

Yes I know. It's just that I didn't really like it for anything, so in my case it wasn't useful.

I'm not saying your recommendation was bad. It has a lot of options and many people seem to like it. My comment was meant more as a reaction to how different we can value things.

It wasn't for me either, and yea.. not a fan of the layout personally. But it was the first compressor that came to mind when I read "multi purpose".

I use a lot more of the compressors that do one thing well, I guess.

Thanks for all replies. Well understood there is no one size fits all compressor and its all up to own taste. Not sure if you share this opinion, but I find the compressors included in Reason to lack warmth. I will have a look at the suggestions, many thanks and enjoy the weekend!

Seems like an awesome deal, though those are the VSTs, right?
I bought the three (moo, frog and 670) REs for some insane intro bundle price.
No regerts

yes these three are now available for EUR 50. Perhaps a stupid question, but will the performance of VSTs be worse in Reason? The price difference is quite stark...

I know nothing of RE vs VST but $50 for the RE bundle is still a great price.

My “desert island” hardware compressor is the Distressor. Most versatile, quick to use, sounds fantastic and covers the basic Opto/FET/VCA family of compressors in one unit.

I’ve not needed the VST version, but it’s got great reviews: http://www.empiricallabs.com/arousor.html

There's no way this is a 7gb download.

And keep in mind you need an ilok for this.

No Ilok needed, you can use Ilok Cloud.
But then you need to be online when using the plugins

I am just asking myself, is it really that good? Good enough for 200 bucks?

Couldn't tell you. It requires Ilok to demo the thing and I'm not going to do that :P I've heard about it over and over and take peoples word for it. I'm generally not interested in VST at all.

You are right sir, I was being an idiot and somehow downloaded ALL plugins :-) that made Reason crash!

All fixed, Ilok works fine through the cloud, and I love the compressors!
