Hey everyone!

I hope you all are enjoying the cooler weather now. I have been making kicks that suck for about a year now, and I think I finally made one that doesn't suck AS BAD. Could I get some feedback please? I'll include my Reason file to make things easier.

My main problem is trying to get the sine wave to get that beefy THUMP instead of just THUD if that makes sense.

Any criticism is welcome!

Thanks so much,

Emmanuel

P.S. Sorry for linking the files instead of attaching them. For some reason it wouldn't accept them.

Howdy

The Reason Project was a bit broken so it doesn't play back as expected without fixing. This brings me to my first conclusion: You are trying too hard and thinking that "more produceryness = more better results". Understandable but it doesn't play out well. Look to be elegant. Elegant means the most result for the least effort.

Your sample is chopped suddenly so it adds another click which changes the feel. While that can be a choice, I don't think you noticed. Which leads to conclusion two: You are not paying attention to detail (yet adding lots of detail in hope of being in-control of detail).

Your result is interesting but as you note, misses the target more than not. See above conclusions. Trying harder never brings the desired results. Work more on the basics so you can do more with less.

This video may be long and detailed compared to the typical edutainment thing. I work you through the understandings needed to grok the basics before running off to duplicate what may be 13 layers of samples and mix-specific outcomes:

Tip: Forget Bass for the moment and focus on Punch Instead of making notes, freq etc all be as looooow on the keyboard and EQ as possible, move into the 50-180Hz area to get the punch. And then work on the Snap & Sizzle which are higher again which define a lot of character and pull the Kik through the mix. much of what makes a drum sound amazeballz is actually the mixing as the sound is made to fit the mix. Therefore making a sound first leads you astray and you spend the rest of the time you work on the track struggling to get things to fit.
