I am very interested in this topic, although I'm no expert. I think traditional fm is fine for purer bell tones. I think modern fm(more modulation i.e. something like Zero) is well-suited for something a little less pure, like meditation bowls, propane tanks, and the like. In my amateur studies I've found additive good for the least pure "bells", that being gongs and cymbals. Of course, one can't forget the potential of physical modeling, given the proper engine. I'd be very interested to hear others' findings on the matter.

To my ears... yeah... FM is more 'pure'. Spectral/Additive is still very interesting, though. Parsec has a folder called "Plucked and Mallets". <----good stuff in there
I plan on layering multiple methods, to see what happens.

Yeah and the title should be "Which type of synthesis is best for bell sounds?"
Who does bells the best? the bell ringer at my local church or possibly Mike Oldfield.

I liked P30 "Church Bells" on my old JX-8P. Nice and warm.

Definitely going for FM here. Scrolling through some PX7 patches now.
No question, the cows have mastered the bell..! But for some it's just too much bell, but for others, it's just right..
This enthusiastic young fellow got them (cow) bells going a little donk :
