I figure it's a monophonic legato sinewave going into a plate reverb.

Am I missing something? I can't seem to get it right.

Do you mean the patch itself or recreating something that sounds like it is played with your hands?

Pitch modulation (Vibrato) might be what you're looking for.

And jack up the portamento to get sliding from note to note, play legato.
