The trick is quite useful in its simplicity
You just have to create an EMI device, assign a virtual midiloop channel, a midi channel, a cc number non in
conflict with other parameters, or a free cc;
plug into the cc gain any lfo so when assign to external control, the learn function will light up
and voila.
Unplug your lfo and plug in whatever you want to take control within reason of that unassignable parameter.
This trick is valid for ton of other stuff, from alt dubbing, to change tempo.
Here is an example I'm controlling the root keys for cv tuner and AS-16 which would be otherwise not editable from combinator itself
