What Type of Sound Is This and How's It Made?

Hi All!

Can anyone tell me what the sound is in this track here (what kind of sound it is?), the panned from right to left rhythmical sound and how it was maybe achieved. The one that comes in a couple of seconds after here, not the beat, I'll post a vid of the beat as well in a clip underneath so you know what sounds to eliminate from what you're hearing:-

I thought it was 2 sounds (like detuned oscillators at first) but now I think it's 1 and it's non-tonal I think. Not sure, about 2nd octave? keep changing my mind lol!

This is where the drum beat / break was sampled from:-

Thanks!

maybe you can expand on this, it's kind of similar but needs work.(sounds like a phaser needs to be added or something)

Just sounds like a gated synth to me. Pretty sure you could get this by finding a similar synth sound, running it through an Alligator and automating the pan... might be oversimplifying things a little but that's what i can hear :)

It's an ambient sound and non-tonal isn't it?

Thor:

detuned multi osc + analog osc saw wave +1 oct higher playing a triad chord

run both oscs through low pass ladder(freq cutoff around 472hz) and modulate filter freq1 with LFO1 with rate set to about 16.8hz using the square wafeform(or sine, try both i guess)

then throw on these effects and copy the automation i have in the sequencer

finally do a high pass with the SSL EQ @ around 650hz

Close, good attempt. It's hard to pinpoint what the sound actually is. I still kind of think it's non-tonal though.

yea, that is the beauty of sound design! all you can really do is make your own version of it and give it your own flavor.

i'm not sure what you mean by non-tonal though. to me, everything from a rock skipping across ice to the sound of an exhaust or the sound of wind can identify with a key in a scale.

i've actually written a melody before with just the sounds of a rock skipping down a frozen lake, without changing the pitch of the individual hits and only re-arranging, the sounds fell into a scale that could be manipulated into music.

Non-tonal usually refers to drums. What I meant was, the sound in the clip doesn't seem to have a pitch. If so what note is it?
