Creating electrofunk pads?

Does anyone have any tips on creating early 1980s electrofunk pads? Specifically, I'm trying to create the kind of pad heard on Tyrone Brunson's 'The Smurf' – see this Soundcloud entry (it's not my account, nor my avatar) from 0:02–0:20ish:



This seems to be two (or perhaps more) synths playing at once. I wondered if anyone could advise on where to start – even whether to use a Subtractor, Malstrom or something else. There seem to be some bent notes in there, but I'm not sure as to whether they would be created as part of the pad itself or via the pitch bend wheel while playing. Any tips, or pointers to a relevant online tutorial, would be much appreciated.
