Adding vinyl crackles
What is your favourite technique for that?
I tried Audiomatic, but even at the lowest "Transform" setting the crackles are too frequent/dense. Then I tried making a dedicated channel for Audiomatic and using the Dynamics gate to decimate the crackles. Tried using Thor's static noise, but didn't like the sound.

Can't remember how good it is but you could try Izotope Vinyl, it's free.

I definitely prefer izotope free plugin for the vinyl effect but I think that some of the pops can be a bit too much so I add a dynamic eq to just pull the tops off a few db. I haven't tried the new version yet but it's definitely worth checking it out.
Here's some free SampleRadar vinyl samples that might be usable as well

Thank you for the suggestions.
I've just tried the Izotope one. It has some useful things like "warp". "Dust" sounds unnatural, long fragments of hum on a completely silent background. Periodic scratches are too dull, the HF part is cut off. There is no option for emulating lots of minor random scratches or dust.

That one is good, but with the same problem as Audiomatic. Crackles are too frequent and it can't be controlled, you can only reduce the volume.Pepin wrote: ↑19 Jan 2022There's also this free RE from SKP

You can use automation to make iZotope Vinyl less predictable, more varied, less silly, etc.
I've started using the Gramophone plugin in IKMultimedia MixBox which I got for free in the last group buy. It's the best I've found to date. Klevgränd have got a Vinyl plugin which is pretty tweakable and has hum and quality and age and the like but it wasn't for me. Might be worth checking the demo out.
Oh yeah...I seem to remember this on sounding like vinyl crackles on some settings. It's quite a good plugin anyway...and it's free.

I think this plugin is by far the best in my opinion

We like the Waves Vinyl plugin, we usually automate the needle playhead point through the track as you get slighly different sound qualities the more you play a real record (to do with the linear distance per cycle, that's why vinyl is cut from the outside in and large blank space towards the middle). Plus as you play your song/track you can increase dust / dirt / LPF over the top to emulate the vinyl's natural degradation the longer you play.
Handy for creating your own 'cut' without the expense of the cutting house and dubplates, and you can 'crate dig' your own music as well to get away from the sterile digital cleanliness of audio samples and synths.
RC20 is also very cool, shame you can't reorder the effects though... but still a superb plugin
Within Reason though, we have used Thor's Noise osc for clicks / pops as well as some pink/brown noise rumble and mixed that in. Be aware though if you use higher sample rates with Noise Osc on click mode then you get more towards white noise (it's how the noise clicks get 'resampled' and smooths the clicks out weirdly enough)

Maybe this can get you somewhere: I've thrown together a simple demo combinator that randomizes the output of D1-RT Line Noise Injector with a sample&hold build from the free DVC-1 and a Pulsar. The trick is that Line Noise Injector doesn't need an input, so you can mix the randomized output with everything else.orthodox wrote: ↑19 Jan 2022That one is good, but with the same problem as Audiomatic. This is just a base for further experimentation, so see where you can take this. I might play around with this myself and build a more complete generator. Possibly looking at other sources for the crackles, Murf's noise generator comes to mind. Also, perhaps introducing some lag on the sample&hold result might be useful.

I once made a patch with Thor. Maybe i can put something in a nice Combinator2 if i have some spare time.

It appears that this has the same problem as Audiomatic on its own, in that you can't lower the density of the crackles, only change how they sound. But perhaps I'm missing something.Loque wrote: ↑20 Jan 2022I once made a patch with Thor. Maybe i can put something in a nice Combinator2 if i have some spare time.
