hi all
daft question approaching

got Bileys PG8X REFILL and some of the presets didn't work so had to get the STEINBERG PG-8X VST however this loaded to my desktop.

how do I get reason to see this, also on a M1 MacBook would this be an issue?

appreciate its a old VST but wonder can it work on reason now?

If it's 32-bit you can't. Maybe inside a wrapper. Plugin buddy works fine for me.

I apologize I can't quite remember for sure if this was the case with PG-8X or not now.
It is a good refill but pointless without the VST.

If you have the VST file, it goes in Library / Audio / Plugins / VST.

My PG-8x installation also has an ".ini" file, but I don't know what it's for or if it's necessary.
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

After exhausting every channels and using all the available terminal commands previously listed on this site, I could not get any of them to work. I've tried on all my various Macs from 2009 to 2020, and I've given up on PG-8x for the Mac.

However, the .dll works on my Windows computer. So that's nice. :puf_smile:

The ".ini" file is usually a Windows thing. I have it in my VST plugins as well and when I double-click it, a window opens with this:

-----------------------------------------------
#PG8X configuration file

DEFAULT_NUM_VOICES = 12
GLOBAL_GAIN = NORMAL
IMMEDIATE_WRITE = FALSE
LOCK =
MIDI_THRU = FALSE
PRESETDIR =
SEND_PARAM_SYSEX = FALSE
SEND_PROG_SYSEX = FALSE
-----------------------------------------------

I'm not sure if I've ever seen an ".ini" file work on a Mac but maybe the developer of the VST made the configurations inside the ".ini" wrapper for both PC and Mac?

huggermugger, if you open up that ".ini" file does it show the same parameters as I've copy/pasted above, or do you have different settings? Thanks in advance.

I might have to make the alert text more obvious on the ordering page, wish I could help but I run R13 on Win / Ryzen & R11 on Mac I7 but haven't heard the M series would be impossible. Used a M1 mini myself before and I really want to think I got it to work but impossible to remember now 3 years later. I hope you can enjoy it on the PC at least.

I'm pretty sure 'ini' files are for Windows, but it was put there when I installed PG8x, so I figured I'd just leave it, it's tiny.

The text in mine is similar to yours but not identical...

#PG8X configuration file

DEFAULT_NUM_VOICES = 10
GLOBAL_GAIN = NORMAL
IMMEDIATE_WRITE = TRUE
LOCK =
MIDI_THRU = FALSE
PRESETDIR = /Library/Audio/Presets/PG8x Presets/
SEND_PARAM_SYSEX = FALSE
SEND_PROG_SYSEX = FALSE

Is it possible the VST you're trying to use is a Windows VST? I can send you the Mac one that I'm using if you like.

the .ini file is also on my Mac
from the manual... "Getting Started
Installation:
Copy the PG-8X.dll (for PC) or PG-8X.vst (for MAC) files into your standard VST folder (please, refer to your DAW documentation, where VSTs are expected to be located). No other files are necessary. After using the VST for the first time, an additional pg8x.ini file will be created. Make sure that the plugin has sufficient permissions to create and write that file."

Perhaps a permissions issue??? If memory serves me there was a problem and work around to get Mac to authorize permissions from an unknown developer> guessing here... as Bitley stated, it was a long time ago I went down this road.
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Well this should be way easier on mac then because it has a designated folder for audio plugins in the system folder already by default.

Ahh I do see the line in your .ini file as "PRESETDIR = /Library/Audio/Presets/PG8x Presets/" and the path seems to work for you so that's awesome.

And yes, if you can send me the Mac one you are using that would be great and thanks in advance.

Or did you mean get the latest PG-8x? If so, what is the latest, and where to get it? I was at the ML web site and downloaded the latest Mac one.

Unfortunately, this is not been the case for me over the past 15years I've been using Macs. MacBook Pro 17", MacBook Air 2015, and now MacMini M1.

Upgrading can indeed make you lose stuff. Older software that Apple deems to be "out of date" and is no longer able to work? That's happened a ton of times over the years. Your icons become white squares and there's nothing you can do about it. Microsoft 2016.... gone... had to do the subscription. Airmail? Gone. Sound Forge 3 for Mac, gone. I was able to sudo myself into getting back Sound Forge 3, thankfully.

Older versions of Lightroom and Ps? Gone. Keynote, Pages and Numbers? Gone. I had to wait 6 months before I could be able to download the new versions which would be compatible with the new OS.

So I'm keeping my MacMini M1 as is. Right now, everything is pretty stable with a few known bugs that I can deal with.

I know that when I get the MacMini M4 it will have Sequoia or something newer. It will no doubt introduce problems and such but for now, my 4 year old MacMini is in almost pristine condition and takes a beating and keeps on going. Here endeth the "rant" hahaha :D

Oh my god this is not fun. Did you try the process described above? You guys do never have to reinstall anything. That's something from the old days.
