Hi all,
Does anyone know if it is possible to link a Reason effect to the modulators from a VST3? For example: use an envelope in Phase Plant to modulate the damage control of Scream.
VST3 modulators for Reason effects

Hi mimidancer,
Thanks for your reply. I'm aware of the options that are available in the Reason shop. But thanks for the tip though.
I would like to know if it is technically possible to route the signal from a modulator within a VST3 to a Reason effect. Could be via a CV out signal from the VST3 (I think this option is not available in Reason?) or via a Combinator (I cannot get this to work either).
Is there a method that I did not try yet to get this done?

if there is not a cv out jack on the back of a device there is no way I know to get cv out. It is a common complaint that is usually in the form of someone wanting to get midi out of a vst. Just FYI the murf stuff works well if you understand modular. I use the murf envelope whenever I need an extra envelope. Off-topic I wish you could use audio rate signals for modulation. But in reason, audio jacks are a different size.Ja ja wrote: ↑06 Apr 2023Hi mimidancer,

CV outs are unique to Reason. VST3 has no specification for this so the only way would be if the VST would allow you to route the modulator to an (additional) audio output. Then you could convert that audio signal back into CV inside of Reason.

Yes, Combi not have CV out. You need to use alternatives..
try to use VST Audio - > CV with some RE utilities, or Thor.
May be Envelope Follower (using incoming audio) can help. You can try to use any devices with included Sidechain or Env.Follower
Like our ASVF-212 or Catalyst 2 filters with Env.Foll, or Tranzient RE with Sidechain.. and many others, include any stock devices in Reason..
You can also Use VCV Rack with huge collection of modular devices, and send signal as audio, to one of the Sidechain or Env.Follower input in Reason device/RE.
Also try to use in VCV Rack anything like CV->Midi, after send midi where you need.

Hi all,
Thank you for your replies.
Unfortunately, routing the modulator directly to the audio output of the VST3 seems not possiblefor the plugins that I tried (Phaseplant and Pigments). Thanks for the tip for VCV rack, but I don't own that plugin.
I think audio to CV could work but it isn't quite a convenient way of using the envelopes of a VST3. I imagine something like this:
- Create a modulator that I want to use inside a VST3.
- Use that modulator for the gain of a high pitched sine inside the VST3 and route this to the audio output of the VST3.
- Route the audio output of the VST3 to a envelope follower (for example the one inside Sweeper).
- Use the Sweeper CV output Fol/Env to modulate something else in Reason.
The downside of this method, besides the hassle to set up, is that the CV signal is getting clouded by the sine wave.
More modulation options inside Reason is definitely high on my wishlist. A modulation utility (like Pulsar) with advanced freeform modulation options with clear visuals (like the modulators inside Phaseplant, Pigments or Bitwig). That would be awesome.
Thank you for your replies.

What about any of these REs:
as generators:

Don't they give enough flexibility for your modulators? (And there are quite some more in the RE shop.)

Hi jam-s,
The long answer: I'm relatively new to sound design and trying a lot of things and seeing what their possibilities and limits are. For example: I was looking for a envelope which would retrigger on every note, when playing multiple notes subsequently without releasing them. I found out (via this forum) that that was possible with Thor. However, those envelopes have limited possibilites in terms of freeform drawing. Then I found Shape LFO editor, with a retrigger function and a lot of flexibility. However, its editor works with steps. If I would like to draw an nice looking exponetial function, it's quite some work. The editor I realy like is the editor in Europa. However, the retrigger funtion is missing...
Do I ever need all this functionality? I don't know. I like exploring the possibilities within Reason.
Thanks for the list. I haven't looked into all of them yet, so I have some more to explore.
The short answer: probably yes, but I like the Kilohearts modulators a lot. That's why I wondered if I could use them in Reason in some way.

The one that is often overlooked, but crazy powerful, is Sidechain Reaction: https://www.reasonstudios.com/shop/rack ... enveloper/
