Arturia V synths, external input

so some of the Arturia V series synths have an external input but I'm struggling to find how to get it to work. Anyone managed it?
The 3-4 etc audio ins on the back of the VST device don't seem to do anything.

When you want to process sound thru a synth (hardware or software), you often have to open the VCA on the synth to allow the external input to pass thru. That usually means playing a note on the synth to open up the ADSR. And you'd have to know where the external audio input was present on the front of the synth so you can route it where you want it to go. Each synth will be different in how you set it up, but if the OPTIONAL INPUTs on the VST shell are lit up green, it's likely that you can do it.

Here's what it would look like on the ARP2600V. There's a 'preamp' on the left where the external audio comes in, and I've patched it to the VCF. Then I have to press a key and 'play' the ARP in order to open up the ADSR (actually, the AR, the ARP's second envelope) and hear the external audio passing thru the VCF into the VCA and finally to the output Mixer.

PS, in fact, because the ARP is semi-modular, I can patch the preamplifier directly into the output Mixer on the RH side. Or I could patch it into the VCF and then patch the VCF output directly to the output Mixer. In either case, I don't even have to play a key on the synth - the connection is direct from input to output, no VCA (i.e. no envelope) involved.
