The RE had the distortion added to it in 2017 :)

There are updates planned for the RE, but not sure which features at this point...
Indeed

I hope the clicking when used with the Reason sequencer is finally going to get addressed.

It's a great VST, but it's a crazy world that I can get a real analogue 303 cheaper (TD-3) than a software emulation!

The RE is $69 :-)

The TD-3 is cool, but is also very basic and you don't get things like the advanced random mode of ABL3.

If the Re was on sale for 50% off I would get it, I like it, but I have VST's that do 'that thing' pretty well...including the Roland ACB TB303 as software!
Yeh, software has some advantages, but so does a real analogue circuit! Other than the squelchy analogue sound, the other fun of the TD-3 was that you can hold it in your hand and program it.
I suspect the 'old' TD-3's are being sold off cheap as everyone wants the new 'devilish' modded version...TD-3-MO

Yeah ABL3 is hands down the best software emulation. And while Audiorealism focuses on staying true to the classic sound, they at least include some creative ways to create patterns with the random mode and the step record mode among other things.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think the TD-3 even has a step record function?

Because I have ABL3, I got myself the Volca Bass when I was looking to get an analog bass synth with a sequencer. The Volca for sure does not sound like a 303, but it's its own thing and sound, and that's why I went with that. And I really like Korg and the features they include. The sequencer is great and the ribbon style keyboard with LEDs is fun to play. I actually like to use ABL3 and send the pattern out to a MIDI Out Device and to my Volca to make a nice pairing of the two sounds.

Yes, its great emulation and the random mode seems better at writing bass lines than I am. :D
I am demoing now and its on my 'to buy when it goes on sale' list (I am not saying it isn't worth $69, its just I already have Roland's own emulation so its not a priority!)

Yeah the random mode is fun! And I like that changes are in realtime when you keep "apply" engaged. So adjusting the notes and all the sliders like note density and accent will adjust in realtime. And then hitting next seed with those settings...it all really helps to perfect a randomized pattern.

I can hear an almost random clicking/crackle when i just play it with my keyboard on the initial patch (sound like a load spike but nothing shows on the meter). It's weird as I cant hear it when I play back patterns from the Re.

My brother has the devilmod on order, I think he's hoping to get it for his birthday so I'm sure to get a play with it at some point as for the RE I think I would rather have a vst version having said that the price would have to be discounted for me to buy the software rather than a hardware device and the hardware sounds way better ;)

I was very surprised when I had a play with one I was expecting it to be smaller and flimsy but it felt nice and the knobs felt like they could take all that tweaking

Not necessarily. One of the chicks I was hanging out with at the start of the 90s had two 303s. She also danced so much she tore the ligaments in her legs. She was a legend.
