we really do waste so much money on paid for synths when there are great ones we either already own
or are out there for free
i have only just realized this since i started synthesis with thor
and i have realized its a powerhouse.
i think half of the presets that get bundled with synths are to make up the numbers
and they dont really give you agreat idea of what the synth can do
until you start to learn it though and through
so here is a question ( aside from what we already own ie europa , thor etc
outside reason
"which synths are there to stop us wasting our money?
not rack extensions because i have yet to see a decent free one that can rival paid for synths

well.... its an old one but

i nominate tyrell n6 what about you ?
and you really need to check out the free banks by sonic underworld and the unfinished.
these are two of the best free banks by sound designers ive come across and for free they rival paid for premium presets
and the n6 rivals paid for synths of course

Came in here to suggest Tyrell N6, just a great classic fat sounding synth and rock solid. U-He have a bunch of other free synths that I haven't bothered to check out, would be interested to hear some opinions on them

There's a company called NUSofting that does some nice free synths, quite unusual and out-of-the-box. Sinnah and Noisetar are two that I've used and really liked, but unfortunately they're pretty buggy. Might just be on a Mac, they were originally coded for Windows and don't seem to cause problems there.

Yeah Tyrell N6 is great
And check out the GrayTech 2D/3D [Hoverland] skins for it.

Of course, I'd add to the list all the other u-he synths, including Podolski and Zebralette. I don't use TripleCheese much as all, but I have it.

And there's all the offerings available via CM magazine, which includes very capable versions of u-he's Bazille and Dmitry Sches' Thorn and others. And from time to time, limited full versions of synths. I subscribe through Google Play for $2.99/month. But you can buy any recent issue and get all of the plugins on offer up to that publication. And with the digital subscription, you can cancel anytime. Some good reading too.

+1 also for Helm.

I found this one of the most interesting synths i discovered in the last time. Did not used it much yet, because it is a bit complicated, but really should look a bit more into it. It has a free monophonic version and there is a limited CM version available.

I was just wondering, why do i not use more often one of the good free synths? I came to the conclusion, that i avoid them, because there is often no further development...I found myself, that this ia kind of important to me, so i avoid other companies and comercial products too, if they do not develope it anymore. I remember a few synths and fx and i was checking the last change log and if it does not show anything within the lat years, i did not bought it, even it was cheap...

Still blown away by how close this is to the original.

We shouldn't forget about Rostnomo. https://www.propellerheads.com/shop/rac ... nthesizer/
That's a pretty cool one and it offers something unique too. Not just a bread and butter synth.

Weirdly enough I almost prefer to pay for my music gear over getting free stuff, not because I believe the free stuff doesn't offer any value or anything, but because every time I pay for something I feel guilty about not using it. I don't know how many songs I've created simply because I've thought to myself "Damn, I've paid for this. I need to start making some music with this one. Otherwise I've wasted my money".
Every time I've downloaded a free product or managed to win something it usually doesn't get used as much in my music. It's interesting how the mind works.

Zebralette is proper - and you can stack them into combinators to your hear's content.
Tyrell N6 - yes!
I've been really enjoying Bazille CM - I dunno if you'd count it as free as you have to buy a copy of Computer Music magazine, but then you also get Thorn CM which is also great!

But if you DO count them... Zebralette, Tyrell N6 and Bazille CM - from U-He alone - are enough to make rock'n'roll!

I don't have any other freebies - although I'd definitely have Dexed if I didn't have FM4 and PX7.

Yeah, it is tooo complicated. I suggested to the developer to allow to make a custom skin with macro knobs/sliders. And he is doing it, but he plans on charging >100 bucks for extra for the skinnable version, or something. Perhaps he is still thinking about it... We'll see what happens.

That's how I feel about most modern soft synths. They are loaded with so much stuff it's overwhelming.

But thanks to everyone for this thread. I've added a couple more tools to the toolbox. I can now spend even more time fiddling with stuff rather than making music!
