Good question. I am not sure if all VST2 plugins are compatible if the host only supports VST3 or if it supports VST3, it automatically supports VST2.

If not, you can through all your older plugins directly into the trash (except like 32->64 bridges there are vst2->vst3 bridges available).

"VST 2 compatibility with Steinberg VST hosts will remain, however, we recommend to root for the latest version of VST."

It's pretty clear. If devs don't start compiling for VST3 soon, then building VST2 plugins will be incredibly difficult to do properly without the subset within the VST 3 SDK. So, basically, if you make VST's after October 2018, then you're doing so with whatever tools you have at hand.

I wouldn't panic just yet. Devs are likely to still keep releasing VST2 format into 2019 at least. Maybe we'll see support in Reason a few years later...

So... it's like what I was understanding and suspecting: new release/updates of current VST will probably be in VST3 format. It's a bit ironic as I really discovered the VST world just because I could suddenly use them in Reason. And now, VST3, time for a change? Hoping for VST3 support a bit faster, please :) . Anyway, It looks like Reason 'fits me' so well I could stay 'blind' to VSTs such a long time... Now I think there are great things in VST, obviously, but I still prefer using Reason (and RE) than any other DAW. Reason is more logical, 'hardwar-ish' and inspiring to me - but I'm just a hobbyist (so it's just important I can relax and have fun with it).

I think that means they will stop releasing all the documentation for VST 2 for developers. This is to get more developers to convert to 3 (because they are probably trying to get to 4).

That said VST 2.4 has been out so long that I'm sure there is plenty of places to get documentation about it other than Steinberg.

I would think this would affect mainly new developers who would be more inclined to write for VST 3.

I think once a big player like NI decides to switch over, everyone else will switch over. Until then I don't think Steinberg can do a whole lot to get developers to convert over.
