With all the discussion around VST vs RE, seems to me there is also VST vs ReFill. I have some VST that are refills and vice versa
1) Juggernaut (Impact Soundworks)
2) BFD Drums (FXpansion)
3) Forest Frame Drums (FXpansion)
When I stopped buying VST I looked for and replaced them with counterpart RE's - eg replaced Neo Suitcase Rhodes with Radical Keys.
Anyone know of any other VST that are also ReFills ?
VST vs Refills - not just VST vs RE
This realization I've had a while back is that refills are basically in the same category as hundreds of vsts.
Combinator instruments being another one, tons of custom setups to use with a number I've lost track of ages ago.
The new vst dedicated module is welcome regardless, because more ways to do things, is more ways to do things.
Coming from a guy who has and still uses vst format. From a guy who owns omnisphere.

Up to a point. I have the Juggernaut VST (Kontakt) and its UI is way superior to the refill version, hence I was not tempted to replace the Juggernaut VST with a ReFill. However, now I will be able (hopefully) to use the Juggernaut VST with its great User Interface in Reason.Oquasec wrote:This realization I've had a while back is that refills are basically in the same category as hundreds of vsts..
Ah, that explains it then.
Gonna be spendin $$$ on more refills since I never did much research on those either.Bunjaman wrote:I don't know more quality soundpacks (refills)Oquasec wrote:Besides kontakt's scripting engine [that thing I never use] what else is missing from nnxt?
Haven't done much research on vsts in years

The better performance excuse does not exist for reason. Rack extensions don't let you write code as low as assembly does I believe.
It's sandboxed nature is the opposite of an optimized vst.
Being a parrot right now btw.

Ive been using Reason since 2.0 and never brought a Refill or a VST that is in anyway comparable to a Refill.
if bug free... I may dabble with vst... but hell... got too much to work with now... I admit I did not beta test

This is a good topic. Well before the 9.5 announcement I realized that the true competitor to VSTi in the Reason world was not RE but Refills in terms of sound quality. Still a bit disappointed that there weren't more RE based refills. There's a lot for Antidote which I have almost all of but only 2 for Predator?? To me this is where the ball dropped..
