On 11-5-2017 in the Propellerhead LiveStream included At the end of this post Mattias and Ryan gave us the blanket statement that in a nutshell:
If your VST is a VST version 2.4 instrument or effect, then YES it will work!
What does not work is VST midi plugins that send midi. However this is just version 1 of VST in Reason. We focused on instruments and effects first.
So yes, if the plugin behaves according to the VST 2.4 standard, and it is an Instrument or an Effect, then it will work.
Because there are thousands of plugins that say they comply with VST 2.4, Propellerhead can't check them all to make sure they really do. Thats also why there is a beta. If you find one that is misbehaving tell propellerhead.

What is considered sending midi? For example xfer's nerve can do export of the internal sequences to the host. Will this work?

I don't know. But since question concerns the current beta, the place to discuss this is in the beta forums :)

I don't have plugin XYZ. Do I need that in order to make my VSTs work in Reason. Now I'm really confused.

;)
Players are to MIDI what synthesizers are to waveforms.

If I don't have any VST plugins at all will THEY still work in 9.5, and how will I know they are working?

If I do get a VST where do I get it from and what does it do?

Perhaps I should wait for plugin XYZ. Will it be on sale?

If you use the plugin on a tree and nobody notices, is it still VST?

I have a tree. I tried a LA-2A plugin on it, but nothing happened. Nothing I could notice.
I did it for science and also for you Fam.

Hello fellow travellers,

I've been having some fun researching what's available by way of free VSTs. Now that I've (just) been granted access to a Beta 9.5, I've started to make some traction. The table below shows where I've got to.

I've not attempted to rank these, as we are probably all looking for something different, however personal favourites so far are DEXED (a DX 7 emulator with loads of patches available) and Tyrell N6.
Any comments welcome.
  • VST INSTRUMENT Status "Installation experience with 9.5 Beta, build 8,412"
    Crystal 2.5.zip Amber "Works well.
Accessing additional soundbanks causes a Reason crash (bug reported)
Issue with Remote mapping not working correctly (bug reported)"
    Dexed_x64.zip Green "Works well.
    "
    Helm_64bit_v0_8_6.msi Green "Works well.
NB Installs both x32 and x64 dlls. Essential to delete the non x64 dll to avoid a Reason crash."
Kontakt 5 (free version) Amber Works if somewhat clunky. Accessing the patches is awkward.
MauSynth10.dll RED Could not get either v10 or v11 to work - Reason disables either plugin (bug reported).
    Plex2.zip Amber "Works well.
Crashes Reason when accessing other soundbanks (bug reported)."
    Qyooo_1_0_2.zip Green Works well
Reactor 6 (free version) Amber "Works, if somewhat clunky. Reactor is itself a container for instruments. The free version gives access to 5 instruments, and so you end up with instruments in a container within a container. Which one do you snapshot to the front cover of the VST container?"
    Scrooo_1_1_0.zip Green Works well
    Stigma_1_0_2.zip Green Works well
    Synth1 V113beta3.zip Green Works well
    TAL-BassLine-x64.zip Untested NOT TRIED.
    TAL-Elek7ro-II-x64.zip Untested NOT TRIED
    Tunefish-v4.0.1-win64-vst24.zip Amber "Works well.
Remote operation does not work for rotary controls (bug reported)
    v4.0.0 caused a Reason crash"
    TyrellN6_V303_Win.zip Green Works well.
    Zebralette-U-he-2_2_7_2_Win.zip Green "Works well.
Time-limited trial software (e.g. Zebra 2) is also installed without notice."
Apologies for formatting as couldn't figure how to get my Excel table or JPG into this forum.....
