Thumbs up to this emulation of the Ensoniq SQ-80. It's got a very interesting and distinct sound.
I had an Ensoniq ASR-10 sampling keyboard back when it first came out in the early 90's. Always craved one of their synths - and this emulation really does hit the sweet spot. There's a free demo version - go check it out.

If you own V Collection, it's $49.

Related, I'm still on V Collection 5, and have not upgraded as I've thought the upgrade prices for the past few versions have been too high. However, I just checked my Arturia account page, and it's offering me version 8, plus SQ-80, for $149... which is not bad at all.

If you haven't upgraded in a few years, it might be worth logging in to see what they're offering.

I get GAS every time Arturia has a sale. V8 plus the new synth and 2 sound packs currently €269.

It isn't just an SQ-80 emulation, it's an ESQ-1 and another I forget now. It sounds lush though.

Text from original post was copied directly from their product page, but I think you are correct that some other waveforms lurking in there:

SQ80 waveforms
The keyboard’s original factory library, ranging from sinewaves to unique drum transients, all distinctly synthetic in their nature.

Transwaves
An additional technology taken from Ensoniq’s follow-up generation of synthesizers, including ‘Transwaves’, a pioneering form of wavetable application.

ESQ-1 hidden waveforms
ESQ-1 preceded the SQ80, but had the same software. The same ‘hack’ was applied to produce a new selection of unique waveforms.

SQ80 hidden waveforms
By ‘hacking’ the original SQ80’s software, users unearthed a series of unpredictable waveforms made entirely of manipulated code.

I still have my EPS-16+ and a crapload of disks. Although I haven't cranked it up in a few years now and I question the integrity of the floppies. I did however find a site out there that had many files in the EDE format that the keyboards used and if I am not mistaken you can load them into Kontakt.

I swapped my ASR-10 floppy out with a ZIP drive shortly after those mods were available. It still loads up the files just fine. I believe you would need either/or Geibler's tools or ChickenSystems Translator to convert those to something Kontakt will read. I converted all of my sounds to SF2 format years ago and made an NN-XT refill of them. Took a while, but at least I have the old sample library available. I need to work out a good way to set up the ASR-10 key switches in a Combinator so I can use the 4 layers dynamically like I did on the old hardware.

Can't really comment on hardware but I remember getting good results using this as a trigger back when I was playing with keyswitches in combinators some years back. https://www.reasonstudios.com/shop/rack ... ote-stand/

Thanks. I'll have to dig into it a bit further. I also have Hamu's stuff which did have some momentary type switches. Here is a snippet from the ASR-10 manual describing the unique dual buttons next to the PB and Mod wheels.

Got it. Yamaha has a similar function on their keyboards. One Note Stand will work more similar to how Kontakt does key switches. Assining it to a key. It would be interesting to get a momentary control on the combinator.

FYI, if you DO buy this VST, there is a nice set of free SYSEX patches available here to import and add to your library.

I bought the SQ-80 V a couple weeks ago. I visIted the Gearspace page and downloaded the zip file. It took me almost 2 hours to get all the folders created but when I was done, I had a nice neat collection of all the SYSEX banks. Now it takes only a couple minutes instead of 2 hours to install them anywhere.

So for anyone wanting to get the 4,500 patches, you don't need to bother going to Gearspace. I've sorted everything into folders, included installation instructions for both PC and Mac, and put everything into one zip file on the front page of my Sound Dimension web site here:

You are too kind, sir. Haha yes you do... all my ReFills are YOURS now. More to come soon!

I'm so glad you got the VST... it's just amazing. I had the original Ensoniq SQ-80 in the late 90's as a hand-me-down from my brother who is a Royal Conservatory of Music alumni. Here it is in 2003... and you can see Reason running on my old-ass computer...

I made quite a few songs with it and ended up getting Reason because the sound patches in the synth were kinda limited. No one back then knew of the "hacked" patches inside the keyboard itself. So yes, when I saw this from Aruturia... no brainer... jumped on it right away.

Then, wow... found the Gearspace archive and set about figuring how to get them all into the VST Banks... and voila. If I can ease anyone else of the excruciating amount of work it took (ok I exaggerate) I'm all the more happy.

This plugin invites Creativity. I love the dirt in the low fi wavs. The filter is warm and just screech-y enough to make your teeth grind. It is easy to create sounds with motion and life. And the bell and marimba wavs are totally awesome 80s.
