Hello,
I currently have an old (10 years) Dell laptop running Reason with Serum and Kontakt plugins suite, and my computer is pretty slow while running those.
I'm thinking about buying a new one:
HP Pavilion 16" 16-af0051nb
Intel® Core™ i5 - 1334U16 GB RAM
Do you think it would be sufficient for my needs ? Or do I need something beefier ?

Should be fine for running Reason. All the standard advice applies, buy the best one you can afford at the time because they're not too easy to upgrade. Reason 12 runs beautifully on my 7th gen i7 that I built in 2018 but it's obviously more sluggish than my new 15th gen core ultra i9.
You probably don't need something beefier, but in theory at least, a more powerful laptop would last longer.
Now as to whether you should get a laptop or a desktop, that's another story. Powerful laptops will always have more compromises than powerful desktops.

Costs about the same as a MacBook Air m4 and the M4 is nearly twice as powerful as the intel one… it’s a no brainer.
Consider a mini m4 pro, waaay more powerful than the air and I think cheaper… also, bds.

Does it tho? The MacBook Air M4 is significantly more expensive, plus it's a Mac, which mean all the usual bullshit that comes with owning a Mac.PhillipOrdonez wrote: ↑12 Apr 2025Costs about the same as a MacBook Air m4 and the M4 is nearly twice as powerful as the intel one… it’s a no brainer.

The mini m4 pro is about the same as the HP laptop he's proposing, plus it's going to need all the peripherals, including a monitor.
Considering he's got a 10 year old windows laptop to replace I think he's one of us, not one of you Macintosh weirdos.

Last I checked the air costs 999. The mini pro is about 1000? (The one I ey have my eyes on is the studio so I don’t follow these two in terms of prices) Both are significantly more powerful in cpu performance which makes them a better deal that will last them longer before they can no longer function properly, especially the mini due to having a fan. Regarding peripherals, they probably already have a monitor and mouse and keyboard laying around? Yeah you will be better off with a dock for greater connectivity but isn’t essential at first.pushedbutton wrote: ↑12 Apr 2025Does it tho? What’s the usual bs from owning a Mac? The lack of upgrades after purchase? For storage that’s no longer an issue with Thunderbolt 5, the base comes with 16 ram, and all I hear are good things about the os, like customisable keyboard shortcuts. And I’m fed up with the bs of owning windows pcs!
I’ve never owned a Mac in my life (lies, as a child I did have a Macintosh that was so old, green was the only colour its monitor would output) but my next computer will be a Mac: silent, powerful, long lasting, energy efficient. One spends less money in the end because they last so long and are so good.

Thanks for your answers !
Mac is not an option, as the friend I'm buying this computer for is not a Mac user at all.
I'm ordering this computer for him since I have discounts on HP computers currently, I can have this one for 599 instead of 699. I don't think new macs are below 1000 unfortunately ^^

I had a Lenovo for around 600 bucks but did not cut it with music software, it was an older gen i5 intel laptop with 16 GB ram, but it sucked for music due to the fact power scheduling could not be turned off in the bios, so system latency was to high to run realtime applications……. Beware of that!
