Reason 13.1 Released!

How do I find what patches are new in Reason 13? I seem to have imported a "New in Reason 12" folder, did they release something this time around?

As far as your other issue with shortcuts not showing content, it sounds like indexing hasn't completed? Do you see the indexing indication next to the shortcuts or favorites lists? Still spinning?

Indexing will take a while the first time. After that it will do a very quick scan when Reason is started.

One thing I love: the new browser sticks with the device that launched it! How many times have I been browsing then tweaked another device and suddenly a new device is created when I go back to browsing.

Another thing: the integrated sequence data editor. I was doing some parallel edits today that would have been a real pain with the old system.

One thing I hate: saving now causes playback to briefly glitch out. Not a big deal, but always a bit disturbing when it happens.

Just upgraded and why the hell isn't the browser window floating on it's own? Why is it locked into the limited workspace? I want to slide it to my other monitor out of the way. SERIOUSLY.

Reason 13 Browser Layout

This is how I get around the whole browser issue. I use the right-hand panel to keep the browser open there and the left-hand panel is where the instruments/effects etc. live. I've set it up as a template and it works great. I can hit F9 and the browser appears perfectly in the same place every time.

Sometimes instead of hitting F9 I will just click on the Add Device thingy on the left-hand panel and the browser will just pop up in the right-hand panel as if I had hit F9. The great thing about this is that I can preview patches in the browser using the up and down arrow keys and each patch will show up on the left-hand side of the screen. When I find something I like, I'll just commit it.

I have put the mixer section on the right-hand side. If I have lots of instruments, I can just easily pull/extend the mixer out to the left so I can see everything and work on stuff. When I'm finished, I can then just slide the entire panel back to the right with only 2 channels showing. This is all very efficient for how I work with Reason.

You can easily detach the Mixer in Mac or Windows and position it on the right-hand side. In Reason 13, go to the menu bar, and choose Window > Detach Main Mixer. You can then resize the Mixer section to your liking.

I started putting the devices used for that track in the mix track itself. I see it as in the old days of daws where the instrument was a plugIn for the track. It was treated like an FX. So I started using it like this.

Everything needed for the Mix track goes in here. My rack layout is horizontal I have one rack for each track in the same order as in my mixer with the main rack on the most right side (as in the mixer). So I add new insruments to the composition always to the left of the main rack.
The only thing I that bugs me is that I cant klick and hold middle mouse and scroll the racks horizontaly.

Could you add a pic pls, dont understand the last half of what you mean. ( Forget it, you mean the navigation panel to the right. I got it now)
Also do you mean for each Mixer group chanel you have a rack??
I am still on the search for the optimal and most logical rack setup.

There is one fatal flaw in your approach. If you use things like that, adding instruments in FX slot and then stacking FX below the instrument (or above), FX that introduces delay is not reporting that delay to a host (Reason) and then Reason can not PDC (plugin delay compensation) align tracks when needed.

So For example in your workflow, if you add a limiter with a lookahead or some distortion with oversampling then that track will still report 0 (zero) samples of a delay to the main mixer and nothing gets aligned.

Not aligning your tracks to the rest of your tracks is a setup for failure in numerous ways. Phase problems, timing problems, rhythm problems, and so on.

Here you go. Basically I organize each rack column is a group. I group every project into these categories: Drums, bass, synths, vocals, Effects. The order is always the same, and the navigation panel on the right side is how I can quickly go from one end of the rack to the other. I keep the instruments and effects unfolded for the most part to be able to find my way around it. I haven't been as anal on the organisation aspect on this particular project as you can see it has not been colour coded, for each category is meant to have the same colour to aide with sequencer and mixer navigation as well.

The device palette are always collapsed because I use macro buttons on a stream deck to create any device I need and it is coded to close the device palette automatically upon creating a device so as to not waste any space in the rack/sequencer.

I like the browser for what it does, I am exploring the factory sounds in an entirely new way, but it needs to be dockable. Popping up right on top of the rack is hopeless. I love the new sequencer though. I full screen the editor because i prefer it that way but I can switch it with f8 back to the clips view. The toolbox being right there is a great improvement and the audible note preview makes working so much more fluid.Overall I think it is a great upgrade from 12. I have submitted an RS feedback form about docking the browser. I think everyone who cares should let them know.

Is the take away here that the delay compensation is measuring the difference between the insert send and return, or is otherwise linked to those insert ports somehow?

Huh? Do you mean multiple displays? If so, things work absolutely fine, aside from the new browser being locked to 1 display.

Mix/Audio Channels are where PDC takes place, inserts specifically IIRC. There would be no correction if both were in the Rack OR inside the insert in the Mix Channels. As far as I’m aware, and I’ve not tested extensively, but inserts are the only place PDC is applied (when set to ON).

Possible unpopular opinion: outside the rack you may never notice even 4ms delay. I should note that many digital recorders had around 3ms delay and musicians (with only a few exceptions) never heard it/felt it. It’s only when you combine the non-delayed and the delayed that even 1 sample delay can be “fatal”!

Can't determine if it's sonic placebo or what but the sound quality seems better. The new design is definitely more efficient IMO. Everything seems so easier to get to at the click of a button. 100% sure you’d hear no difference between the same song exported in 12 and 13 assuming all instruments/FX would load in both. That’s the whole point of Reason, sonic consistency. I don’t think there is any reason to believe a song from version 1 would sound any different loaded into R13.

I also remind folks (every time the above is posted) that in the competitive DAW market, IF Reason Studios had some trick up their sleeve to make R13 sound “better”, they’d be on the rooftops crowing about it and your email inbox would be flooded with the same…
