The M Class limiter was not designed for controlling high peaks on snare hits and such. At least to my knowledge you need to use a clipper for stuff like that. But I can’t find it in devices.
Please advise. What do you guys do?
Does Reason have a clipper?

The m-class <s>limiter<\s>maximizer has a pretty nice soft clip mode.

What happens if you turn off the limiter and only use the Soft Clip of the MClass Maximizer?

Heyyyy I will try that! Great advice coming from RS directly

Is there an official tutorial for this device?

There are likely some excellent resources available on YouTube if you want to learn how to set it up.

Overloading directly to the output/soundcard works, too! : D

Just to be clear, I am referring to using a clipper on individual elements/tracks, such as kick or snare or bass or vocals.. I don’t put anything on the master. I leave that part to my mastering guy.

I was just kidding (even if it works).
I don't find it anymore, but GVST's GClip was a good RE for clipping. They have their VST plugin, too, which is also doing a great job.
I prefer that, because it's a downwards clipper. It distorts without making the audio louder.
But the MClass route works, too.

Yes but kinda no.
The Clipper in the M-Class is nice (Limiter off yes). BUT to use on a sound not already blasting over the top, you need to do some work which is fine but possibly easier to get a free VST somewhere like Kazrog.
Doing the hardies, you would:
0. Combinator (optional)
1. Gain (R13) or an RE (Selig, Forgotten Clank etc)
2. M-Class Maxy: Clip only
3. Gain
Use the first Gain to upwardly trim the signal (and see the overs count)
Clipper to set Hard-Soft
Gain to de-escalate the signal.
If using a Combi you could even set one knob to raise/lower the Pre-Post Gains. But you may then want to add another Gain to trim up losses if you are hacking hard.

I remember doing some plugin doctor tests on the m class clipper about a decade or so ago (at least it feels like it, when did the rrp come out? That’s when I did that) and vaguely remember that the signal had to reach a certain level for the m class to react. Fuzzy memory and all but yea like Benedict says you need to push it and then trim it to compensate. Combinator is a good idea there.
I… don’t use clippers *gasp*

The M-Class threshold is set to 0dB (FS) so indeed it won't be gettin' clippy with it until the signal is there (or within range of the soft spread). This is just dandy for the mastering application but not so useful if you have drums peaking at -6dB but want to you shall not pass them.PhillipOrdonez wrote: ↑13 Dec 2024I remember doing some plugin doctor tests on the m class clipper about a decade or so ago (at least it feels like it, when did the rrp come out? I use the Clipper in masters to reduce limiter load (and the dullness that goes with it) but past that, I occasionally have need, but honestly, they are not really that important to me most of the time as they just make things overfull seeing I like the dynamics. That said, sometimes the clip provides a very pleasing sparkle on top of things - so long as you are only kissing the sky and not ramming it down.
Also, don't forget that Saturation-Distortion does this for you too. Sure it is gnasty when you drive too hard but that initial turnover is a form of clipping too so you shave some peakies.

Heya,
I posted a project whereas I tried to emulate hard-clipper kind of a sound. I previously posted my combi2 in the shit sound thread. I use this effect in this too. What I did was adding a few M-class Maximizers more of. In this Reason file I automated my effect off and then on. For me this is close to a hard-clipper in the soundwise. This effect got very close to a desired sound, maybe the razor off the tops should be a bit more radical tho. I might work on this and release a proper release at some point.

Mclass maximizer just doesn’t do it for me so I got the Standard clip and OMG, game changer!
