How to create Unison effect in Thor using analog oscillators

Posted: 22 Jan 2024
by Mohammadyarahmad
Hello,
I want to create a Unison effect in Thor using 2 analog osc as shown in the picture.
What should I do?
((I don't want to use Multi OSC, which is available in Thor).)
It's better to create it as it has the options in Europa, like Blend and Spread.
Thanks

Run Thor's output through the Unison module.

Is there not a way to manually create Unison in the synth?

could you do it if you had more than one Thor?

No, only via an external unision module, Thor has no integrated unision effect, Thor has only a delay and a chrous.

You want to stack multiple thors in a combinator
And do some fun combinator to programming to control the number of detuned voices, the detuning, panning and dry/wet.

The number of voices should also control the pan position for an even spread.

EXACTLY

Could you explain more?
What should I exactly do with the Thors?
Thanks

Like the others mention, stack X amount of Thors in the Combinator, based on the number of oscillators you want to make a single note 'voice', so you can start simple, add in 3 Thors.

In each Thor set the Osc 1 to Saw, and then you can go to the AMP/Pan section, on 1st instance leave centre, on 2nd pan hard left, and 3rd pan hard right.

Go back to Thor #2, and set detune on Osc 1 to left, and Thor #3 set Osc 1 detune to far right. Now when you play a note Tor 1 is mono (centre) and in tune, Thor 2 is hard left detuned down, Thor 3 is hard right detuned up.

You can add more as you go, and program the combi so 1 knob can control each Thor's pan amount and osc detune amount.

Classic Oscillator (Sine, saw, square, triangle) are free running, so each note will start wherever thorugh the wave form (each note can sound different), but if you swap to Wavetable and use Basic Table, set all 3 to saw wave again (or they are all the same) then when to play your note trigger, the waves all start from the same place and detune form there, meaning a 'retrigger' waveform mode

Alright, am I the only one curious - why are you working so hard to try to make the old workhorse Thor function like a modern synth?
All the "new" stuff, like big unison stacks and MSEGs wasn't yet a thing in 2007. Luckily, for people who like that kind of stuff, Europa DOES have them.

Is there something in Thor you really like, that Europa doesn't?
Personally I have more fun playing with Thor, so it wouldn't be all that weird.

Use Multi OSC and use different detune modes and move the detune amount

There are a TON of super saw combinators using other synths from Subtractor to Thor such as in this thread:
viewtopic.php?f=8&t=7517930&hilit=super+saw

That's where I'd start since most of the work has probably already been done for you!

But that would be too easy.

Thank you for your time and help

I like its old-school appearance.
How can you do AM(amplitude modulation) in Europa?

could you do AM if you had two instances of Europa?

We are trying to multiply signals here. How?

hm ok you could route the audio out of europa to the audio in of a complex-1 and then patch it into OSC AM, would that do it?

Is it not possible to do Math operations(like multiplication,...) through Reason's built-in devices?

A simple patch in Thor using the mod matrix to route audio input 1 to audio output 1 scaled by audio input 2 should do the trick to do AM.

In general Thor can do most math operations using the mod matrices.

Could you describe it in more details?

explains how to do the basic routing for using Thor as an FX device. Now instead of routing to filter3 input you simply route to audio output 1/2 and use audio input 3/4 as source for scale (in the third column of the mod matrix). Don't forget to increase the amount to 100% there as well.

It should look something like this:

Also have a look at the manual for more info on how the modulation matrix works.

I did the exact things but nothing happened, Thor's sound didn't change.

Have a look at the combinator programmer: Thor should not receive the midi notes. Also have a look at the oscillator modules of Thor. As you can see I removed those as one would not want to have Thor generate any sound by itself.
