Halloween approaches and I’m writing a cool song for it. What is the best theramin patch or Refill you recommend? I was gonna buy one but wow they’re expensive and take some serious skill.

Hey y'all I could really use some help. For some reason R12.6.1 isn't searching/finding instruments for me when I type it in anything I selected...

Can’t you just pitch bend a sin wave?

Or even better, set up a sin wave patch with portamento and vibrato on the mod wheel. Maybe add some saturation or a tube amp sim to make it sound retro.

Yeah, a Theremin sound is really just an oscillator that produces something very close to a pure sine wave.
I’d look around for a clean sample of one (could even be from a song, if it’s in isolation), and then loop just a few cycles of the waveform.
Or you might take a triangle wave, add a small amount of white noise, then heavily lowpass (with 100% key follow) them until you have basically a slightly dirty sine wave.

What really matters is what you do next. As mentioned above, careful use of heavy vibrato and portamento (and maybe pitch bend) will get you really close. Also, a Theremin player’s left hand controls the volume, so set up a controller (or automation) to modulate the amplitude in all kinds of dramatic ways.

A search for "theremin" comes up with: "Psychedelic Theremin -FP" and "Vox Pamelia (simulate slow theremin) -DW".

The wave is not a pure sine, so that’s where most emulations fall down with regards to realism. You can read a bit (and follow links) from here to see more in depth analysis on the waveform:

"Paul with a tear in his eye did apologize to me before his passing that theremin lovers may have been mislead."

Blimey. Theremin players take their art very seriously.
