How does this affect me?
Reason 11 (or earlier) users
After September 25, 2023, you will no longer be able to authorize your computer for using Reason 11 or earlier offline (without an internet connection).

Your current computer authorization state will continue to work (without any guarantees or support) for as long as your system remains stable. If you buy a new computer, reinstall the OS, or make any other severe changes to your computer hardware, your offline authorization may become unusable.

If you buy any Rack Extensions for use with Reason 11 or earlier - or register any Reason 11 (or earlier) version - after September 25, 2023, these will not be enabled for offline use, since you will be unable to write a license to your Ignition Key/computer.

Due to this change, we will not be able to provide support for offline authorization-related problems for Reason 11 or earlier after September 25, 2023. You will still be able to use Reason 11 (or earlier) and your Rack Extensions online with internet verification, though.

Reason 12 users
A completely new offline authorization system is included in Reason 12. Update to Reason 12.6 or later to use Reason 12 without internet connection. Please, read this article for more information about the new offline authorization system in Reason 12.6.

Why are we doing this?
The technology has simply passed its due date. In order for us to make better products, we need to remove any reliance on legacy components that might otherwise hold us back.

What are my options for running offline as a Reason 11 (or earlier) user?
Purchase the perpetual Reason 12 Upgrade
Or sign up for an Annual Reason+ subscription (which includes access to the latest Reason version - plus all Rack Extensions made by Reason Studios)
Or authorize your computer now and don't change anything in your system/setup from now on (neither recommended nor supported)

Please check out this limited upgrade campaign! (ends June 30)

I'm on R11 with offline authorization. Just to be clear. Does this mean that my current REs will continue to work offline after 25 september? As long as I don't buy any new REs after that I'm cool right?

That's how I read it. I am slightly gutted as was thinking of a well overdue pc upgrade but that will not be in the next few months.

Guess online only for me if I go this route.

I like my current offline authorization. I think I'm just gonna stop buying anything for some time. I guess RS just made my GAS a lot easier. Thanks RS.
I feel like I'm being coerced into upgrading. Not into that. I'll make sure I buy any potential REs I want before this shift happens. And then I'm out.

Man being on the RS train is quite the ride. Sometimes it's awesome. Other times it's not so great.

I don’t think it’s that big a deal. You want to run your janky old software off line then you can run it on your janky old computer till it dies. Or it will still work if you let it phone home. Or you can just pay your upgrade fee and move with the times. This is like every other software.

Um, the way I read their help article is that it's not 'Offline authorization will be discontinued for Reason 11 and earlier", but more like "Offline authorization will be discontinued for Reason 12.5 and earlier".

Perhaps they should just say "Subscription Authorization Only from the 25th September 2023".

Because from that date you won't be able to install any version which is before 12.6 and get it authorised after the 25th Sept 2023.

By that I mean, obviously the subscription Reason+ version has the companion authorisation and I presume that now, with the 12.6 perpetual version that will also use it, because rather than a perpetual version, it now becomes a yearly subscription version.

I'm still running 12.5.3d5 on macOS Ventura (and also long time Reason licence holder since v1 blah blah blah) and even my old Ignition key still works on another mac running Ventura, and that's not old software or machines..

I find myself getting more frustrated by this small, but pretty significant change to the way they are effectively now 'treating' their loyal longtime user base, by that I am referring to those who have religiously paid for licenses/upgrades etc for all the software (major versions, REs etc) over the years.

I don't need to switch to a Reason+ model because I have all the software, but now, in 3 months time, if I wanted to install the software on a new machine, I would be forced to switch to a yearly subscription model and not a perpetual license....that is poor show!

Still love Reason though....

I think I will shut up now :(

What? That makes no sense at all. They just released offline mode for V12 on their last update 😂 did you not hear? Authorizer is being phased out, therefore a new offline mode had been implemented already... Wher4 do you get the subscription thingy from? 😂

Well, we do want a lot of updates and goodies added to the sequencer and program, and this is how it's done! Time to move forward. 'Head em up, move em out.'

We are continuously improving Reason 12, and to be clear — there are no plans for a Reason 13 release in 2023.

People in 2023 still being amazed that the march of technology sometimes causes inconvenience and/or expense is... amazing

A separate blog post from Niklas:

https://reasonstudios.com/blog/reason-1 ... orization/
It’s not every day you get to deliver news that’s really good, but that’s also a bit tough to deliver.

Today we are announcing that we are closing the old authorization solution for offline usage of Reason 11 and earlier. Reason 12 has been worked on since 2020 and is still being worked on with 12.6 being released just a few weeks ago – making it the biggest change to the Reason codebase for a very long time. It has made Reason future-proof and easier for our dev team to add new features to. Since Reason 12 is such a big change to Reason it has also meant that the new authorisation solution can only work with Reason 12.

We know that focusing on Reason 12 and onwards and closing a 15-year authorization solution that has caused so much headache both for us and for the community is the right choice – but it’s also a tough one, because those of you not yet on Reason 12 will have to rely on online authorization only.

I won’t go into all the tech details of what this means, but if you want to dig deeper there’s a page here that goes into a bit more detail. The gist of it is that if you rely on Reason for your music, our strong recommendation is for you to be on Reason 12 absolutely latest from September. That’s why we also have a campaign launching today to give everyone the possibility to get on the Reason 12 train.

With Reason 12.6, Reason is in the best state it has been in for many years. With our dev team now no longer having to support old software, we can look forward and continue building on the music making capabilities of Reason. I hope you are as excited about that as me.

Well, it is a little convoluted, but..... up to 12.5, your license was forever, I mean, if you have a reliable, well built and controlled machine with redundant drives (RAID) and it was authorised at the first installation, you never, ever had to connect up to the internet or the authorisation servers again. Technically, that licence could last for a very long time.

Even with updates, I pull down the update file onto another intermediate clean machine and then transfer it manually to the target machine and it never has to talk to the 'mothership' for authorisation of the update etc.

However with 12.6 being released and the old codemeter licensing being phased out, you now have to connect your offline computers once a year to re-authorise, as in, they are no longer able to run for years without being connected to the internet to continue working, so that is a subscription, it's just a free yearly subscription - but it still requires the target machine to be connected to the internet once a year - that is until they change that in the future.

Basically, up to rel. 12.5, I would never have to talk to the mothership anymore, unless I had to re-install, but if I go to 12.6 and beyond, I am forced to talk to the mothership every year, If I like it or not.

It's not a totally offline mode as it has been for every previous perpetual licensed version (notwithstanding the initial install and authorisation).

Hopefully, that now makes sense... :)
