RE-2A for sure, goes on the front of any vocal, bass guitar, or other track that doesn't have big attack transients. It's really insane that one of the best compressor plugins is unavailable now. I'm incredibly picky about compressors. The only other one that is my goto is the FabFilter Pro-C. I have a bunch of others, and some are pretty good. But the RE-2A and the Pro-C are the top two for sure.

If anyone's looking for a versatile VST compressor, SSL Native-X Comp is on sale at the moment for $14.99 which is an absolute steal for this excellent plugin. Worth it for the "bleed" function alone

Any love out there for Red Rock Sound's C1 compressor series? I use C1-Alpha quite a lot and love it (although it has a weird sidechain bug).

I use the Red compressor from Focusrite a lot, it's a VST. I got it when i bought my first Focusrite audio interface. It was a free gift from Focusrite. It is easy to adjust and tweak, and sounds good.

I use C1-L1 sometimes if I want to go full Hannibal Lector on a snare or a drum bus, but I find it a bit all-or-nothing. Weird, considering how fully-featured & tweakable it is, but I only really like the sound of it when it's smashing something to bits

I actually hate the view-angle offset of the knobs, skeuomorphic gone wrong

If anyone is looking for an RE-2A/CA-2A replacement, the Softube built Native Instruments VC 2A is fantastic and I think nicer (more analog) sounding than the now discontinued Cakewalk offering.

You're right, it takes a pretty low threshold for it to create a noticeable effect. That said, I love using the Alpha to squash gentle vocals and make them sound huge.

I've been trying a lot of those VSTs over the last years. I use Fabfilter Pro-C2 and Pro-MB2 in every mix.
Kush Audio did a great job with their Silika compressor.

I really like one of the Native Instruments compressors. It allows you to select a character for the compressor (warm/hot/bright).

On top of that, it has a gain guide that gives you a hint on whether to raise or lower the input gain.

Well before I get into it, I have to say Reason's SSL mixer compressor is simply incredible, along with the filters, eq, and etc. It has the most clean and musical sound out of many I have tested it. But then in my insert chains, mainly for vocals I have one more compressor to divide the compression workflow along the SSL, and usually it is Slate Digital compressors, my favorites being FG-401, FG-2A, and oh boy the FG-STRESS hehehe

I also always have Selig Leveler at the top of my vocal chain inserts. But I don't count that as compressors, because general compressors don't typically bring up low level well ( but they are great for compressing peaks), unless it's specifically an upward compressor then the Selig Leveler is closer to that definition.

But typically I will also put a Waves MV2 early in the chain to bring out even more low-level ever so slightly.

Ahh yes I should pick up the Unfiltered Audio Silo, quite an amazing reverb. Wouldn't mind having that as an option next to the Valhalla plugins :geek:

Lately the below have become go-to's for me:

Color: Really love Kazrog's True Dynamics, particularly the first two models. I always seem to quickly/easily land on the 'sweet spot' with this plugin. Easy on the CPU too.

Transparency: Already mentioned above is the SSL Native-X Comp. Easy but with all the parameters you need, and also very light on the CPU.

Pretty sure the UAD API2500 DOES use oversampling, explained in the appendix of the user guide.

I get a lot of great results with Elevate, though it is probably more of a limiter than compressor. I use it mostly for mastering, but it works nicely on individual instruments, too.
