why wouldn’t you, at Reason Studios, invent absolute and relative automation?
for example, when automating the volume of channels, this would come in very handy.
absolute and relative automation

For volume automation I rarely (if ever) automate the mixer channel volume. I just use something like Selig Gain (or any device with a clean pass-through that has a volume control). That way I can adjust the level relative to my mix but keep all the level automation going on. When it comes to other parameters though I guess that’d be tricky. I suppose you could achieve a similar effect by having automation directly attached to something - Filter Cutoff say - and then automate a knob on another device routed to the CV input control for the Cutoff. So one would be like, the ‘movement’ and the other would be an overall base-level control or something. I dunno. I’ve never tried it.

You should go read some of the replies in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=7525255
It explains why there is a difference between using the Gain knob at the top of the mixer (which increases the level before it hits any effects) vs the volume fader.

yeah, don’t do that. you’ll be changing the entire gain structure of your track every time you make an automation move.
Set Thor's Rotary on full.
Send the rotary to CV out 1 in the mod matrix
Connect CV out to Level CV of mix channel.
By automating the destination amount in the Thor's mod matrix, you will essentially be automating the level offset (or relative level if understand the question correctly)

just wondering why do you need Thor, https://www.reasonstudios.com/shop/rack ... generator/ is a free one
I use the fader for automation AND setting levels. Yes, an automation TRIM mode would be ideal and has been suggested since the SSL was introduced (if just because the original SSL has absolute/trim modes). But the one thing I always wanted when automating the SSL was a way to select all values and raise/lower them equally. THIS is possible in Reason, so why not use it even though it IS a bit clunky not seeing decibel values in the automation lanes. I actually find it MORE confusing to try to add a gain stage for trimming levels in Reason because not every routing option in the SSL makes it possible to do so...
