The more I think about what this "Companion" is the more I think its a mobile app, like Figure and Take. The word speaks to me as something that physically comes along with you. Probably for sketching ideas that you can bring into Reason directly, like a simplified sequencer.
I think this is the jackpot. You login into your companion app using your reason credentials and you keep the ideas linked. For example, you could use various mobile devices to record several musician's in multitrack mode. Disconnect reason+ to clear network resources.

There's nothing keeping Reason Studios from removing VST support from R12. There's no VST support in the RRP. They haven't added VST3 support to Reason... So perhaps they've decided to just ditch VST altogether.

They found a new customer base of people who enjoy the RRP. It's a new customer base that somehow appreciates REs and the rack more than veteran users who seem stuck, saying they need xy&z features inside Reason.

Companion might be a piece of software that replaces ReWire, because it will be needed again for users who use Reason DAW who want to use VSTs. Except it will be better than ReWire. Launching the "companion" is simply launching the other DAW with your Reason projects. So if you want Studio One to launch when you open Reason, you check that box. It will be Reason+Studio One, or Reason+Logic, etc.

RS is also partnering with other DAW makers to create packages in which you can subscribe to Reason+another DAW.

Not real speculation, but fun making a story out of it lol :)

Well vst's are definitely disappearing from the RS shop, maybe you know more than your letting on.......

Either way I'm not updating till it makes more sense

Hey I just had a thought, maybe the license has run out on the vst wrapper, like the PX7 issue!

Somehow I can't get rid of the feeling that the "+" in "Reason+" means that they want to add something.

I keep seeing an owl ("+"). Or is it a fat pigeon?

How would it be started by Reason on your desktop system?

The option in preferences clearly gives the option to start companion when Reason launches
Perhaps it is the interface that allows for communication between them. If you launch it with Reason, it can connect and work with your other device. It doesn't sound that far fetched 🤷‍♂️

Maybe the companion allows you to drop your project files onto it and it renders all the splits before uploading them to Allihoopa V2.

Then post proof. Where's the link? I'll be happy to concede if there is actual proof instead of "I saw it". :D :D
Was trying to find it. I looked at his user profile to see all of his past posts, but seems I cannot show all posts of a given user. Finding the thread is difficult, but I will now spend half an hour just to prove you wrong because I don't like your tone that much..
I'd just like to add, I've never heard that (thaf paid updates would stop) either. It's doubtful that would ever happen imo.

I really hopes it's some kind of virtual musician. You know, like an imaginary friend. So you get a starter pack of say a Hendrix, John Bonham and Kate Bush.
I just can't imagine what would be the result of that. What a power trio!
Does Kate play bass? Or would that be up to the Reason owner?
No, he missed Macca off the list.

Whoever said VSTs are disappearing from the shop, I'm seeing that too. Only on the main shop page is "VST" listed as an option under Format, but no actual VSTs are found, and that disappears as an option in deeper pages. All of my shop-purchased VSTs (a very small handful) link to 404 page when I click "view product page". So maybe [insert rampant speculation here]...?
I actually found it really strange VST's were listed in the shop anyway. Just a weird way to plug somebody else's goods. Do any other daw companies advertise vst's (excluding vst's that daw company may make)?

Yeah this is what I was thinking, kind of like Rewire as joeyluck mentioned. Whatever this is it seems like a big announcement as it has the Reason Studios top dogs involved so we're hopefully going to get some clarity regarding the direction that Reason is headed. I'm pretty satisfied with R11 Suite, and as others mentioned I'm not interested at all in new devices and sounds. I have so many already that I don't make enough use out of. I may be interested if this Companion thing turns out to be a mobile app that integrates, but I doubt that's going to be made available for Android devices. We shall see tomorrow!

Free DAW updates for life isn't such a ridiculous idea, especially if they can still make money off of rack extension sales or subscriptions.
Not saying I'm fully expecting that, but I'm sure all options are explored, and will continue to be explored.

I'm going all in for a mobile version of Reason on IOS and online with cloud storage and transfer (like Adobe Lightroom) so you can use Reason on the go and everything is synced to the desktop when Reason is opened.

Finally, I'm not the only one that thinks it will be a full mobile version or Reason. I think Reason Studios has put out enough feelers with Compact for production, Take for vocals and Figure for speed. Time for a full app like Cubasis or Beat Maker or FL Studio Mobile etc.

Hope it’s not, that would not interest me at all but that’s just me.

Listen everyone knows what it is they are not going to release another update after the announcement tomorrow.. subscription base with companion collaboration.. not really good for most but new and innovative producers who love being home during the pandemic this is the way to go..

Just wish they gave friction away free to suite owners..

That's definitely not a plus
That was the most dystopian idea I could come up with. This will never be a thing, obviously?
Well, I saw Ryan's video on Twitter and was curious so I updated. Looks like a bunch of us we're fooled into prematurely update a ticking time bomb feature that won't activate until the chosen time tomorrow or Thursday. I am leaning on some kind of monetization scheme for the company, or some half baked feature no one asked for...

If they were integrating with Facebook this way of updating would be the method to use, no one expects the Facebook inquisition!

Did someone say the VSTs are gone from the Reason Shop?
That doesn't seem like a good thing.
