My computer is old and tired. What specs should I ensure for optimal Reason performance? Many thanks in advance.

I build a windows pc a few month ago. The rough specs are:
CPU: AMD Ryzen 3700X (8 Core)
RAM: 32 GB
SSD: 1 TB Samsung M.2
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Super (+ NVIDIA GeForce GT 710 so that I can use 4 monitors)
Soundcard: Focusrite Scarlett Solo 2nd gen (external)

This specs are totally sufficient for my use cases with reason. Until now none of my projects reach limitations of this machine.

Intel i7 (8 core) with 16BG RAM.
SSD is nice but not vital, 512GB should be plenty for everything.
A decent video card too so that you are not dipping into system RAM most will allow 2 monitors at once.

Really high performance, but still decent price:
CPU: AMD Ryzen 3700X (8 Core)
RAM: 32 GB

CPU
Go to CPU Benchmark.com and look for a multi core CPU with the best single core performance you can buy. AMD or Intel can work here, sometimes it depends on your audio interface or other VSTs which can sometimes work better/worse with one processor type over the other.

RAM
16 to 32 gigs is a sweet spot. Go for the fastest your motherboard can handle.

SSD
This can really make your computer snappier and projects load faster. Get the fastest speed you can afford. I believe M.2 connections are typically faster than SATA. I would go for a 1 or 2 TB drive if you can afford it.

Those are the main three things but a good video card can help keep some of the video load off of your CPU. Motherboard type can help as well as better ones have more options for connections and sometimes more speed in getting all of the components working together as fast and efficiently as possible.

Depending on your budget I would recommend AMD Ryzen 3700X (8 Core) or AMD Ryzen 3900X (12 Core).

I had core i5-3570k (4core) , then i7 - 6800k (6 core) performance doubled, now I have Ryzen 3900X (12 core) performance seems to have tripled vs the 6800k.

I have 32GB RAM, but Reason is very happy with just 16 GB. Just make sure you get fast compatible RAM for Ryzen as some internal CPU frequency is directly tied to RAM speed, 3400Mhz or 3600Mhz CL 14- CL16 (DDR4) is the sweetspot.

Looks well covered.

Multi core CPU
32Gb RAM
Dual SSD
Dedicated GPU with dual or triple display output.
And make sure the mother board support USB 3 as it looks like new external audio cards are going that route
Something like a 3rd gen 4i4

I've been looking at the AMD Ryzen 3900X for a new PC. I'm currently using a Intel 6800k 32GB RAM, so I am/was wondering how much of performance boost I would get going to the AMD 3900X CPU.
Have you done tests using the test song file and compared?
What motherboard did you get to compliment the AMD 3900X CPU?
What brand RAM did you go with?
What did you go with for a cooling system for the CPU?
Sorry for all the questions, just really curious.

I keep the 3900X with SM=off - I only use the 12 real cores, (hyper threading deactivated)
Gygabyte Aorus X570 Pro
The Ram is Corsair 4x8GB @ 3000 Mhz CL15, but I have done RAM tuning (spent 2 days to get stable results) and got it up to 3400 Mhz and CL 16 so that the internal Infinity Fabric clock also runs at ~1700 Mhz.

The CPU cooler is Noctua NH-D15
As you can see below, Reason 10 is running the most intensive part of the Reason 9.5 2017 COMPLEX RE benchmark song V2 is only taking 3 bars out of 6 of DSP Workload. (44100 Hz - buffer 1024 samples RME Fireface 400, Windows 10)

Awesome, thank you. This is really good info to know. Would be nice for others with recent PC builds to chime in also.

The whole argument is moot.
Get the best PC you can afford at the time and it will last you longer therefore saving you from upgrading sooner and costing less in the long run.
There is no ideal spec for Reason, just get a good PC.
@pushedbutton on twitter, add me, send me a message, but don't try to sell me stuff cos I'm skint.
Using Reason since version 3 and still never finished a song.

I agree, and this is what I did 4 years ago. Now it is time for something with way more power than my old Beast. The time has come.

We did actual song file testing in the thread I linked to above. You can use my file and run it on your existing computer to get a feel for what you'll get with a better Ryzen. Need Expanse though.
