Yes I agree. One, two, three, four.
Unless of course you want to make big hits like Avicii, then two, one, four, three is better.
And if you want to make even bigger hits you need to add "five". Obviously.

Yeah but how many years into learning hit making noise synthesis production one has to go through until reaching Jedi Master of ultimate distortion level?
A wavetable distortion based synth with a root canal feedback loop in the key of life could also be needed.

That's a great question. It's a topic that deserves a thread of its own. Maybe even turn it into a sticky.

It’s beginning to sound like you’re taking an electronic music class and asking us answers to some obscure questions from the 60s, lol.

Sadly it is a pretty clueless Q.

Some are styles of Synthesis, others are simply parameters or processes.

The answer really is it all depends on what you do with it. I have heard people use lovely old analog synths to make those ugly paint-stripper noises more commonly heard coming from Serum. I bet if I had Seum (and used it) it would sound more like a System 100 or Jupiter 4 playing lovely sounds (and the paint-stripper people would tell me I was shit at it).

FM can be smooth & beautiful or like Satan
Ring Mod can be tremolo or nuclear war.
Sync can be silky fine or gnarly.
Distortion, well everything we do is about distorting the path of otherwise innocent virtual electrons.

Go figure.

:-)

I misunderstood the question. I thought SYNC, FM, RING and DISTORTION were members of a boy band.
SYNC is the harshest singer but he will probably have the most successful solo career, especially if he wears those electric boogaloo boots.

(btw sansome is asking the exact same questions over on audiosex, and getting slightly more varied responses!)

Best advice is just try things yourself and learn to understand what you can do with each type. Different distortion types alone will give varied results. You cant break anything so just experiment, have fun and learn.

Go easy folks, you dont know who this person is or what their situation may be.

@Samsome maybe a music tech course at a college or online could help with your desire to learn. Everyone on this forum is happy to help and answer questions but maybe not every single question that pops into your head! There are more appropriate learning resources out there.

@Samsome - without knowing what you're trying to do or your skill level it's hard to advise. There's really no exact/set formula for what to use and when. No-one is gonna be able to tell you definitively what type of synthesis you should use for every type of sound because it's entirely down to how you program it. An FM synth can sound warm. It can also sound like static or white noise. Unfortunately there's no "cheat sheet" for this stuff. The only way to know what to use and when to use it...is to use it, and learn it.

YouTube is probably where you should start. Guys like Bo Beats and Andrew Huang have some great and fun content explaining some of the fundamentals. I'm sure there are LOADS of others but they're just two that I'm subscribed to. Also I agree with Jack; it might be a good idea to seek out some tuition if you can!
