I pretty much never design sounds from scratch, but if I did I'd choose to work with Europa when it comes to stock synths.

Europa is brilliant for sound design. The UI is so straightforward. The mod parameter boxes next to the modules and built in attenuator knobs makes it a breeze to design from scratch.

Definitely Europa now, it's a great synth and easy to understand

Europa is my goto for some testing, trying out things and sound design. Its the classical workhorse. Only if i want a specific sound or Europa cannot deliver, i use/try others.

If I can't make the sound with subtractor I use Thor. If I can't make it with Thor, I use Europa. :D Trying to save CPU here haha

I still prefer Thor!
I like its semi-modular approach while still letting you see all the settings at the same time.

Can you choose the Combinator? Lol

I'm still on ver 7, I like Malestrom for interesting ambient stuff.. pretty rich for such an old stock synth.. especially since you can spread out the patches with different sounds from right to left..

But Thor is probably my most used stock synth for from-scratch patch design

For me, it’s got to be a tie between Grain and Thor. Then Europa. Subtractor I use sometimes, Maelstrom, never.

Subtractor is my most used and the only one I properly understand.
I just use presets on the others!

I separate the synths by types so I can operate them better.
There are some really good books on the matter.

This will have you using multiple synths in a week.

Thor.

I reach for vk2 , i know it very well now but i think through Adam firldings song sessions am starting to use polysix .

Never use the subtractor (dont know why) , if the op needs a good sounding subtractive sythn as a workhorse i'd recomend splashing out on either Antidote or Fabfilter twin 2 (vst). I learned sythnsis on the latter through Dan worrels' 3 advanced tutorials on youtube. Funny thing is ..the thing dosn't even give you envelopes ..you have to create one from a menu! For me its the original ' hard love' synth for sure.

I still use Thor as my main device. I think it's still one of the best designed softsynth's out there.

Thor and Europa, for me. Thor is still incredibly flexible, and I feel like I'm still learning new tricks when it comes to programming patches with it - it's a remarkably deep synth without being totally impenetrable, imo. Europa is really fun to work with though, and incredibly straight-forward when it comes to getting ideas going - and sounds great!

I’m curious why people list Grain.
It’s a sampler, right?

It's both.... a sampler and a synth. Super versatile!
