Hi All!
Just a quick question about the new GUI update in a few weeks.
This will be to improve resolution on 4k Monitors right? if so, will it improve anything for folk such as myself who don't have 4k Monitors?
Thanks!

where did you get the info that this is coming in a few weeks?
I hope so. Not just in terms of size/sharpness but hopefully gpu acceleration will lead to movement feeling less janky.Creativemind wrote: ↑03 Mar 2020Hi All!

I didn't. Educated guess. They're working hard on it they (or was it Mattius) said. So next update presumably. Sometime in May?

To me, 'working hard' means the opposite thing, there's so much work to do that it will probably take years to finish.Creativemind wrote: ↑04 Mar 2020I didn't. Educated guess. They're working hard on it they (or was it Mattius) said. So next update presumably. Sometime in May?

If work is underway right now, there’s a good chance it will be in a 11.x release, maybe later this year. Definitely more than a few weeks away, but maybe this summer.
As I said in the other thread:

1) If you're on a high-DPI display and your OS is rendering at 1.5x - 2x, the rack will no longer look low-res compared to the rest of your operating system.
2) If you're on a moderate-DPI display and your OS is rendering things at 1x, the rack probably looks small to you. Hardware acceleration means you'll likely be able to zoom into the rack.
3) Even if you're on a low-DPI display (like 1366 x 768 @ 40"), the rack will scroll much more smoothly and feel more responsive.

Yeah in the next update I'd say in May / June maybe July.

I’m with others that “working hard” on a feature doesn’t mean it’s necessarily coming soon, or in a midpoint update. I hope you’re right, of course, but I very much doubt we’ll see 4k support in the next few months, or even this year. I wouldn’t at all be surprised if it doesn’t come in a v11 update.Creativemind wrote: ↑04 Mar 2020I didn't. Educated guess. They're working hard on it they (or was it Mattius) said. Eh?
Reason 11 came out in September 2019, 11.1 was out November 2019 (2 months later), 11.2 came out in February 2020 (3 months later) so I'm going with 2 to 3 months, April / May. I was erring on the side of it being a bit longer due to it being a bigger task so May / June, 11.3.

This is presumably a rewrite of the entire graphics rendering engine, so the best comparison would be the audio engine rewrite in 10.3. That was originally projected to take about three months after 10.2, but ultimately took over six. So we could be looking at August.
Also, the unpredictability inherent in such a big change is undoubtedly why Mattias only said they’re working on it and not when they anticipate having it ready for release.

Would anyone who’s familiar with the guts of Reason know if offloading drawing to the GPU would also improve CPU performance? That would be a cool bonus for large projects.

Aside from High DPI/4k assets, what it will or will not accomplish on the GPU is speculation at best, but I'll say this: I seriously doubt you'll see it "in a few weeks"!
Knowing how much work and time went into recoding Reason just to improve VST performance, I wouldn't be surprised if the GUI/GPU features Mattias mentioned takes until the end of this year. I would imagine recoding Reason so it can take advantage of the GPU will take at least as long, if not longer.

On the other hand, they usually never talk about new features when they are ready to be released or beta tested. Saying on their fb page that they are working on a feature they plan to be released in several months seems risky in brand confidence.

There is absolutely no point in speculating about release dates. It could be anything from a simple hi-res option for the existing assets (unlikely because that's just a band-aid and probably not worth their time) to a complete re-think of how the GUI works and how to take advantage of higher resolutions with a Reason-like feeling. How they solve that problem will have long-term implications for the future attractiveness of both the DAW and the Rack plugin, and there is no way to know how long it will take them, or how much of their resources they are devoting to that part of the project.

Sure, but it's a new "Reason Studios". This isn't the old Propellerhead mentality anymore. They seem to be a lot more open to releasing nuggets through social networking channels and the forums, time scales be damned. I think they're just trying to placate people who keep insisting Reason (standalone) is doomed and they're not developing it anymore.

Will a fresh modern combinator be in this thing you are referring to as an update?
I’d love some nice modernized features for the best tool in Reason
