Are there some good, quite realistic factory drums for Rock/Metal in Reason? (patches or samples)

First of all, I'm new here, so hi everyone! I'm a beginner and the idea of getting into music making popped into my head about two months ago. After trying Ableton Live and Reason for free, I decided to go for Reason and I purchased it recently, and I don't think I will regret it: the instruments and effects look great and very powerful to me! Plus, I prefer working directly on the timeline than on clips like Ableton.
But now let's focus on the main topic: I've been browsing various types of factory drum patches (and sometimes samples) looking for some quality Rock/Metal drums, but I feel like I struggle to find out which could be the best choices for stuff like that.
So, given this situation, which patches or samples would you recommend? Eventually, feel free to suggest some free or cheap VSTs as well. Thank you in advance!

Not sure there are many great rock/metal drums in Reason (but I'm checking to see if I've overlooked anything), In most cases you may need to build your own kits for this format, as Reason seems to focus more on other genres (getting better these days, I have to say). You may find the perfect kick from one patch, the snare from another etc. And more commonly you'll need to stack a couple of kick or snare samples to create the sound you're looking for. The little bit of extra work is worth it IMO, since you'll end up (like a real drummer) creating your own personalized kits! And like a real drummer, if you're sticking mainly to one or two genres, you don't need 100 kits.
There are some ReFills worth checking out including these from Ryan Green (not cheep, but sound great).

I also like some of the kits from Reason Drum Kits, but don't expect any "metal specific" kits to blow you away.
I've also found some useful samples (and loops) from The Loop Loft and others - many of their loop packages (if not all) contain the individual "hits" (samples) as well, but you'll have to build your kits in Reason from these samples (not as hard as it seems).

Refills are some of the most important tools to get in reason.
It's like kontakt. It's like Reaktor.
You either get refills or craft them for that custom sound.
Rack extensions are like refills for modules.

UJAM Virtual Drummer HEAVY. Great playable kits and samples and incredibly useful for building songs using the built-in patterns.
Depending on what type of rock/metal kit you’re after you might have some luck with the samples included with UMPF retro or whatever it’s called - the red one with 80s sounds. I’ve used some of those sounds to make mix n match kits with a new wavey kinda vibe.

there is a free vst plugin from steveslate: SSD5 Free

sure its really limited, but i got some really nice sounds out of it with a bit of tweaking at utilizing the multiple outs. also it gives you that non repetitive feel on all sounds because of its velocity sensitivity and multiple sounds per velocity step. so no robotic/loopy sounding drums.
i use it also for my electronic stuff quite a bit. just the hihats alone give a nice human feel to synth drums.

That SSD5 free is KILLER. I have the full version but really that is as good a kit as I can recommend. And the free version has all the outputs and stuff like the full, you just can't load in packs (like Terry Date which I also love)
Oh yeah, comes with some decent midi files too and mine works well in Reason.

Thank you all for the suggestions! Maybe I'll buy Alt Drums or Virtual Drummer in the future. Meanwhile, I found a really interesting free sample pack (http://themetalkickdrum.com/). Sadly, it only contains kicks, snares and toms, but they sound really nice to me.
I also gave SSD5 a try, even though I didn't really understood how to load samples.

SSD5 is free because it's only one kit, you can't load different samples IMHO.
Please check out this post, where I listed a few options: viewtopic.php?p=442147#p442147
Take a close look at DrumMic'A for Kontakt Player (both free).
Don't forget Reason Drum Kits RE. And the A-List Power Drummer: https://www.propellerheads.com/shop/rac ... r-drummer/
I think it's very capable.
I attached a little loop treated with compression and EQ.

I like Alt Drums too. Quick, easy and sounds pretty good (to me).
For more expensive alternatives (VST) check out EZDrummer/Superior Drummer. They have loooots of different metal (and rock) kits.

I used to make music but now I just cry on these forums. @diippii.com
As others have said, Ryan Greene Alt Drums Vol I is superb and has more than enough to get you by without the need for the other packs; even if the price is a little steep. It's definitely worth every penny.Simone Lombardo wrote: ↑24 Jul 2019First of all, I'm new here, so hi everyone! Way back in 2003, there was a Reason RNS released by Clawfinger that included a neat sampled drum kit, bass guitar, and some other cool stuff. It's not the most feature-packed instrument ever (it was 2003!), but it was a really cool freebie that - unfortunately - isn't available on the current site anymore.
But! Fortunately, thanks to the wonderful WayBackMachine, you can still grab it, and the instruments are free to use as stated in the original article.

For a more serious solution, the Ryan Greene Alt Drums ReFills mentioned are all top-notch, and there are loads of options in VST-land if you wanted to dig into that. But, as a free NN-XT instrument, I'd say that Clawfinger kit is at least worth a punt.
fwiw, I'm still using a combination of Superior Drummer 2 with extra drum triggers, which I imagine I'll probably replace with the Modern & Massive GGD kit at some point in the future. I used some of the Record Drum Takes ReFills for a couple of tracks a while back - I thought they were a really cool concept.

Re-upping this thread to report that DrumMic'a is dead, no longer supported, and can't be downloaded.
Would be great if there was a wayback machine link for this... as someone who wasn't aware of it and now feels sad, angry, and a little lost...
They say they will post all the samples at some point but the loss of this very useful plugin will be mourned.
If it still works, and anyone has the original zip, I suppose it would not be illegal to share it now that the plugin is discontinued.

If something is discontinued, it doesn't remove any copyrights.wtfaulkner wrote: ↑21 Mar 2021Re-upping this thread to report that DrumMic'a is dead, no longer supported, and can't be downloaded.

I use mainly EZDrummer its great and not so expencive.
Download link is still on sennheiser site (https://drummica.b-cdn.net/DrumMicaV1_0.zip) but you need a serial for Kontakt anyway. Did you try to register? The link still there (https://www.sennheiser-service.com/drummica/?lang=en), so maybe there still a chance to get license.wtfaulkner wrote: ↑21 Mar 2021Re-upping this thread to report that DrumMic'a is dead, no longer supported, and can't be downloaded.

So Sennheiser has resurrected Drummica but with some caveats. One needs the full KONTAKT to get full playability. Here is the relevant text from the Sennheiser registration email:
As our close partnership with Native Instruments phased out and NI discontinued the Service Center Serial management end of May 2020, we decided to offer DrumMic’a! as free 3rd party library for KONTAKT to our fans. This means that existing DrumMic’a! installations can be used without limitations, but new installations will include a non-removable time-out for the Instrument when loaded in the KONTAKT PLAYER* freeware. This limit is not applied in the full version of KONTAKT.

There are some pretty good Dr.Octo.Rex metal loops I've used before.

I’ve got DrumMic'a (as well as full Kontakt). Maybe I’ll autosample an Expansion for my MPC and Force. Totally forgot about DrumMic'a & it does sound awesome.

I get a '404' error with these links, and I'm also unable to find the Ryan Green refills in the shopselig wrote: ↑25 Jul 2019Not sure there are many great rock/metal drums in Reason (but I'm checking to see if I've overlooked anything), In most cases you may need to build your own kits for this format, as Reason seems to focus more on other genres (getting better these days, I have to say).
