I have a few modern synths, easy to use with Reason because they are USB connected. I simply create a MIDI device in reason and select the synth from the list.

But what about older synths or synths connected via old fashioned MIDI cable?

( I don't see any of the plain MIDI synths connected in Reason's MIDI device, and don't think I would because straight midi doesn't work that way )... I am guessing I need to figure out what channel my old fashioned synths are on. How can I figure this out?

I'm on MAC OSX and using Focusrite 18i20.

Add an "External Midi Instrument" to the rack and set the port and channel from there. Just try each channel in turn if you can't find out from the synth what channel it is on. There are only 16 possible channels.

Thanks. Seems pretty easy.

Per port. There are at least easily 256 possible channels, chaining an Emagic AMT 8 and a Unitor 8 for instance. ;)

Sure - but it’s probably quite easy to simply follow the cable to the interface in this case to see what port is being used. Maybe slightly harder if chaining synths with midi thru. I imagine anyone with a 16 port x 16 channel set up would have taken notes! ;-)

• "taking notes" is a built in standard in MacOS X, where we can draw our studio and import pictures of our synths.
