StringWERK uses the mod wheel to control expression, but the device does not have a mod wheel control on it. So the only way to create the lane as far as I can tell is to plug in a controller, hit record, and move the mod wheel. I don't always have a controller connected to my computer, so is there any way to create a mod wheel lane without a mod wheel (either physical or on the device)?

You could put it in a combinator, or use a different CV device.

Like this for example https://www.propellerheads.com/shop/rac ... generator/

There is a small pull-down menu at the top-left of the sequencer that lets you add various types of automation lanes to any track. Just select Mod Wheel from the menu.

Thanks guys! Both great suggestions. I’ll have a go when I’m home :)
