Hi all

I do not do video editing in any fashion but have a mp4 video that i need to sort the audio out on (lots of wind noise over spoken word). Does anyone know any free software so that i can extract the audio as wav and then try to clean it up before importing back into video. Ps. I can clean the audio just need to get it into wav and then reimbed into mp4 somehow.

Audacity will do the job. Just drag the MP4 file into Audacity and it will automatically extract the audio track.

Oh and for the second part... you'll need some kind of video editing software to merge the cleaned up audio with the video. Do a Google search for "free video editing software".

Good luck!

I use ffmpeg, a command line tool to do this exact thing. It can extract an audio track, rendering it as PCM, and save the .wav file. Then I can also remux the cleaned audio back into the video when finished.

ffmpeg is free, but it has a lot of options, and those vary depending on the format of the audio in the video file. If you want to use it, but can't figure it out with some Googling, I'll see if I can help with actual examples based on what you can tell me about the file.

Not necessarily. You can remux the video and audio without any editing software whatsoever (using a lot of free solutions out there). I do this often with MKV files.

Indeed, personally I find an editor to be a lot more convenient, especially if there's any kind of re-synciing or repositioning of the audio that's required Also, depending on the software, audio cleanup can be done directly in the editor, as well. But there are of course, many paths to the top of the mountain

Indeed. I'm just a huge fan of remuxing, since there's no loss in video quality that you will often get when doing it in an actual video editor. Also, many remux solutions offer re-sync options. I guess it just depends on what you need to do.

I tend to keep my video editing solutions for the deep change stuff, though.

Back in the days I used to use VirtualDub to extract audio from movies or mp4 :D
