I’ve thought about the future of DAWs in VR is in general and can’t help but feel that Desktop environments will still be the preferred way for at least another decade.

Touch screen OS has never and maybe will never replace Desktop OS in terms of music production.

VR will be an even tougher sell, most people will have console versions of VR either PSVR or Oculus Quest type VR - the ones attached to your PC are too high an entry barrier for average users.

Reason will be ready when those damn glasses will cost less than $20. 3DTVs died for the same reason. HDRTVs reign supreme. No expensive addons for a bunch of people Netflixing, but Reason could be the first DAW to be ready, imho.

The year is 2028. After Facebook acquires Avid (Avid acquired Native Instruments in 2026 and NI acquired Propellerhead in 2025), it looks for a moment like maybe Oculus and Propellerhead will work together on a VR version of Reason. Alas, hopes are dashed when Reason is discontinued so the team can work on a social version of Reason Compact for Facebook's artist collaboration service.

VR is dead for now until its next revival in about 15 to 20 years.

Honestly I feel like the korg minilogue is not far off. There are differences but it’s a two oscillator synth with fm and RM
The wave shapes and filters are definitely different but a lot of the same types of sounds can be made
Also minilogue has an arp and delay

I have the MiniL-- for a lil while longer... and I have to disagree, respectfully.

- The Subtractor is Capable of Bass the Minilogue dreams about.
The two filters - if USED - holy MOLEY!!! HP on the first... LP on the second... ADD REZ on Both... OUCH!!!
(it's just the DAMN SSL filters are not capable of cutting the lows on the SUBT without Cutting TOO MUCH.
See the SCOPE.. just clicking ON the HPF on the SSL cuts TOO Much)

Image
- The Semi and Cent detuning - AT WILL - is Genius.

- The Minilogue, Model D, NYX ... waxes the Minilogue for BASS. I Love my Monologue!

In the middle/upper/etherial Registers, the Minilogue rocks! - but, i turn to Antidote. It very Filling.
Anyone know where I can get Antidote in hardware?

Thor's Awesome but a Pain to "RETUNE" when switching patches...
(retuning is easier on Subtractor - just - remember the Cents)
- maybe Selig has an easy solution for me? pretty please??

We can't even mute MIDI notes in the sequencer. I think VR is a ways off, like in another lifetime.

I love VR, it's great fun! I've wasted so much time in it.
But no, I don't think Reason belongs in VR.
@pushedbutton on twitter, add me, send me a message, but don't try to sell me stuff cos I'm skint.
Using Reason since version 3 and still never finished a song.

But years ago they sad that you could touch a screen with your fingers for a command, now it is normal, so... I try to think out of the 📦, try to tak an oscillator and the distance to a wall If you go with your controller to the wall pitch higher ect.. ( small thing).

Please not before there are vr systems that are smaller and are not so annoying to wear, have no cables and a higher resolution.

Well if you think how much CPU your average DAW at full load needs, and then add the graphics and physics requirements of rendering and simulating all that gear in a 3D space...it's a very, very long way off. Plus it'd just be too expensive. For the developer and the consumer. The simplest solution is usually the best; if I had something like a Nektar P6 that'd be about as close as I'd need to get to "touching" the Reason devices, as it'd have enough controls to work away from the screen. In VR you can't feel things, there's no resistance, no tactile element. I think to translate something like Reason into a VR setting would actually be more work than it's worth.

Not to say I don't think there'll ever be a VR DAW. But it'd have to be constructed from the ground up to work in that space. Off the top of my head I'm thinking virtual studios where people can all join a session and interact with simple, virtual devices to make music together. Kind of a musical playground/lobby. And they could invite virtual spectators into the room with them so some people could perform, some people could watch/dance/fly around. You could customise the performance space, make cool lighting shows and effects that wouldn't even be possible in the real world. But yeah the tech has to be way more ubiquitous and affordable for it to be a thing.

I don't think it will, no. Other ways of making music or performing are already available in VR and given that VR is a "visual-first" experience, the most popular do away with trying to emulate real world devices or environments and go for an abstract or a simplified schematic approach.

This ^. It's just not a wise idea. Why drastically increase the system requirements of processing power for a visual aesthetic of a music software. The higher processing power required wold be better suited to running Reason for what it's actually meant to do. Additionally, twisting virtual knobs won't emulate twisting real ones any better than a mouse does.

I've actually tested out a Mixing VR product (prototype?) at an IMSTA Festa even a few years back. One you get past the cool factor, it's not very useful in a practical sense.
